Semillas Batlle, a historic Catalan family-owned company specializing in the breeding, production, and marketing of seeds, has announced a reorganization of its shareholding structure alongside the launch of an ambitious investment plan aimed at reaching €40 million in annual revenue in the coming years.

The transaction coincides with the entry of R&D BCNA into the company’s capital, replacing the Institut Català de Finances (ICF), which joined the shareholding structure in 2020 through its investment vehicle ICF Capital Expansió II as part of the company’s professionalization process. Following the successful completion of this phase, the public fund has sold its 30% stake to the Barcelona-based family holding owned by entrepreneurs Ramón Nadal and Daniel Visa.

R&D BCNA, which was already a minority shareholder in Semillas Batlle, thus becomes the company’s largest shareholder, while the Batlle family retains a minority stake. Management will remain in the hands of the current executive team, led by David Giné as Chief Executive Officer, ensuring continuity in the company’s business project. Neither the exact shareholding breakdown nor the financial terms of the transaction have been disclosed. The ICF fund’s initial investment amounted to €3 million.

The company highlights the strong alignment between the founding family and the new reference shareholder, as well as R&D BCNA’s in-depth knowledge of both the business and the sector. Daniel Visa has also been a member of the board of directors since 2024.

Alongside this shareholder change, Semillas Batlle has launched an investment plan affecting all of its production facilities, located in Bell-lloc d’Urgell (Lleida), Torrente del Cinca (Huesca), and Talavera la Nueva (Toledo), as well as its corporate offices in Molins de Rei (Barcelona). The plan, which is already underway, includes the acquisition of new machinery and improvements to existing facilities to strengthen production capacity and support the company’s projected growth.

In its latest fiscal year, closed in May 2025, the company recorded revenue of €32 million, doubling its turnover over the past decade. The current objective is to consolidate this growth trajectory and exceed €40 million in revenue, driven by the investment plan and the support of the new shareholder.

Founded in 1802, Semillas Batlle has a strong research and development department focused on the creation of new varieties, as well as an extensive seed bank containing historic and pure varieties. Its operations are structured into two main divisions: Field Crops, aimed at agricultural professionals and specializing in seeds for cereals, legumes, forage crops, and oilseeds; and Hobby, targeting non-professional users and offering a broad range of products for home gardens and gardening, from vegetable, aromatic, and flower seeds to lawns, substrates, fertilizers, and crop protection products, both organic and conventional.

R&D BCNA, for its part, is a family-owned holding company with interests in industrial and agri-food businesses, such as the Catalan company Pastisart, as well as investments in start-ups and real estate assets
