The Hazitec ABEDI project, with a budget of €5.1 million and funded by SPRI and the Basque Government, will research a novel system based on virtual environments aimed at advancing the cybersecurity of industrial systems and equipment in the context of emerging digital threats. The initiative, which will run until December 2027, seeks to transform the way manufacturers design, operate and update industrial systems with embedded software.

Led by Orbik, the consortium developing the project is made up of CAF Signalling, FAGOR Automation, Mondragon Assembly and Ormazabal as anchor companies. They are joined, from the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network, by the GAIA Cluster, Ikerlan, Koniker, CAF, FAGOR and Ormazabal, forming a multidisciplinary team that combines industrial, technological and applied research capabilities.

Machine control

According to the consortium, “embedded software is the computer program that controls the internal operation of industrial machines, equipment or devices.” It is responsible for managing critical processes such as machine safety, production line control or the operation of railway signalling systems, they explained. They also stressed that this type of software must be extremely reliable and secure, as any failure can directly affect industrial operations.

The ABEDI project will investigate a novel system based on virtual environments to advance the cybersecurity of industrial systems and equipment in a context of new digital threats.

ABEDI will enable the automation of conformity testing, promoting its application at industrial scale and strengthening the adoption of cybersecurity, with the aim of enabling Basque industry to make significant progress in regulatory compliance and in the cybersecurity of its products,” said Borja Pérez, Product Director at Orbik.

Among the key enabling technologies prioritised in the project are Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Data Science; Cyber-Physical Systems; Cybersecurity; and advanced virtualisation.
