Bullnet Capital, an independent Spanish venture capital investment firm, has led an investment round in Inspiration-Q, a spin-off of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), focused on the research, development, and commercialisation of quantum computing-inspired software solutions. The company was founded in May 2021 by Samuel Fernández Lorenzo, Juanjo García-Ripoll, and Diego Porras, all of whom hold doctorates in the field and have more than two decades of experience in quantum computing.

With this investment from Bullnet Capital, Inspiration-Q will be able to expand its team and strengthen its software platform to deploy and validate new algorithms across various use cases, both in the financial sector and other industries. The investment is supported by the InnovFin SME Guarantee Facility, with financial backing from the European Union under the Horizon 2020 financial instruments.

Inspiration-Q is the ninth investment made by Bullnet with its fourth fund, Innvierte Science Tech Bullnet Capital IV, following investments in Katoid, Quside, Leapwave, Enthec, MLCode, Deep Detection, AGPhotonics, and Mapsi Photonics.

In recent years, substantial technological improvements have been achieved in both basic and applied research related to quantum computing, with processing involving more qubits becoming increasingly robust and scalable. However, it remains highly uncertain when it will be possible to implement large-scale, functional, and versatile quantum computers that can replace the computational capacity of classical computers.

However, this lack of hardware does not necessarily correspond to the software domain. Since its founding, Inspiration-Q has been working on developing algorithms that operate on conventional computers while providing the advantages in optimisation and sustainability already anticipated by the pioneers of quantum computing. Furthermore, these algorithms are ready to be implemented quickly and securely on commercial quantum computers as they become available on the market.

The software solutions developed by Inspiration-Q, which have already been successfully demonstrated with the first clients, focus on solving complex optimisation problems. Examples include financial applications aimed at portfolio optimisation, risk analysis and pricing, as well as the prediction of key variables in financial dynamics.

Samuel Fernández Lorenzo, Juanjo García-Ripoll, and Diego Porras state: “We are leading the industrial implementation of quantum-inspired algorithms, a technology that is already production-ready, without needing to wait for quantum computers to mature. We are convinced that our technology will significantly contribute to digital transformation, allowing companies to tackle complex numerical problems in unprecedented ways, especially in the financial sector. With Inspiration-Q, our vision is to make this technological breakthrough accessible and beneficial for all companies, and to realise the agile transfer of cutting-edge research into the industry.”

Additionally, they affirm that “Bullnet Capital not only provides private capital but is also a strategic partner that will help us develop the technology and production processes.”

About CSIC (Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas)

The CSIC is a public research organisation under the Ministry of Science and Innovation, comprising 124 basic and applied research centres in the areas of Life Sciences, Material Sciences, as well as Social Sciences and Humanities. The CSIC's Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform brings together 20 of these centres that research the development of quantum technologies and quantum algorithms, with a strong focus on practical applications and industrial transfer (https://qtep.csic.es). Inspiration-Q is a spin-off of the Institute of Fundamental Physics, the coordinating centre of the Platform and one of the national leaders in quantum technologies and quantum-inspired algorithms.
