Bullnet Capital has led a €2.5 million investment round in IMPETUX OPTICS S.L., a spin-off from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), in a transaction that will support the industrialisation and commercial launch of its advanced microscopy technology.
Founded in 2012, Impetux Optics specialises in the development of advanced photonic instrumentation for the life sciences, including optical tweezers systems and new confocal microscopy solutions. The company originated from research conducted by professors and researchers at the UB Faculty of Physics in fields such as photonics, biophysics, and advanced microscopy, combining this scientific expertise with a team with extensive experience in product development and the commercialisation of scientific instrumentation.
At the core of its technological offering is a proprietary innovation based on acousto-optic deflectors (AOD), which enables a new fully solid-state and programmable confocal microscopy architecture. This technology eliminates traditional mechanical components and enables high-speed imaging with lower phototoxicity, greater robustness, and a high degree of adaptability to different experimental conditions within a single system. Thanks to this development, Impetux is taking confocal microscopy to a new level, offering faster, more robust, and more versatile systems for applications in cell biology and drug discovery.
Through this transaction, the company aims to accelerate the industrialisation and international commercial rollout of its technology, in which it is already positioned as one of the global leaders in the development of optical tweezers. The spin-off also seeks to strengthen its position in the global microscopy market, particularly in applications in cell biology, drug discovery, and quantitative analysis.
The funds raised will allow the company to advance its technological roadmap, including the development of a first integrated version with Sensocell® and a standalone high-performance version. In addition, the company will strengthen its team, industrial capabilities, and commercial strategy, with the goal of consolidating its growth and exploring opportunities with strategic industry players. At the same time, it will scale up production and commercialisation of its Sensocell® optical tweezers systems.
The primary objective of the round is therefore to drive the industrialisation and commercial launch of the company’s confocal microscopy system, as well as to accelerate its international expansion.
The investment is supported by the InnovFin SME Guarantee Facility, backed by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 financial instruments.
This transaction also highlights the commitment of the Universitat de Barcelona and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation to knowledge transfer and the creation of high-impact innovative companies capable of transforming scientific research into technological solutions with international reach
