The Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT) , a public entity attached to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration , today announced a public investment of €1.92 million in the Spanish company Kaleidos to boost its open-source interface design and development platform, Penpot . This operation, carried out through a public-private partnership within a €6.9 million funding round , will allow Spain and Europe to advance technological sovereignty in a field heavily dependent on foreign powers.
“The Spanish government is committed to European digital sovereignty, domestic talent, and open source. We are participating in Kaleidos not only because of its Spanish-made innovation , but also because of its solid track record. They have been working for 15 years with clients such as Inditex, Scotland Yard, and the University of Lausanne,” said Óscar López, Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, during a visit to the company.
User interface design tools are essential in technology : there will always be a need for a space that connects the user to the software in an easy and intuitive way. Until now, the most widely used platform for designing these interfaces has been monopolized by a single American company that controls designs, data, and developments that often represent sensitive and critical intellectual property for any country in terms of security, defense, health, and industry.
Kaleidos, a company founded in Madrid in 2011 with 15 years of experience in developing "made in Spain" technology for third parties, from startups to large corporations such as Inditex, Decathlon, or institutions such as Scotland Yard or the University of Lausanne , has devised a solution that offers this strategic autonomy to the development of interface design.
Penpot emerged from one of the many hackathons Kaleidos organizes for its employees. It's an innovation born from the ideas of its workers , who meet every six months for dedicated sessions that unleash the creativity of the entire team—a young workforce that is 60% female .
Penpot demonstrates that Spain can lead a strategic counterweight in user interface design . With SETT's contribution, Kaleidos is able to scale its sales team, launch its paid product, and tackle one of the great technological challenges of our time: developing open-source European software for collaborative user interface design.
It also boasts a novel approach, being the first design tool for both designers and developers—a hybrid profile that offers a broader market, fosters multidisciplinary partnerships, and guarantees collaborative teams. As a development tool as well as a design tool, generative AI finds in
Penpot is a perfect fit. It treats design as code, making it a native development solution for any AI without limitations , and it adapts to the one the user employs.
SETT is carrying out this operation through the Next Tech facility , with funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Next Generation Funds of the European Union) , whose objective is to support innovative projects and boost the financing of deep tech companies.
