CDTI Innovación has supported nearly 300 business-led R&D projects aimed at driving innovative technologies to tackle cancer in areas such as early diagnosis and advanced therapies, strengthening the role of business innovation as a key lever to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and represents a major health challenge that requires technological responses based on innovation. Research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) are essential to advance prevention, early detection, and effective treatment of this disease.
Aware of this challenge, since 2018 CDTI Innovación has allocated more than €230 million to finance nearly 300 business R&D&I projects related to the fight against cancer, encouraging Spanish companies to develop technologies with clinical, social, and economic impact.
These projects include solutions with high potential impact. Examples include Protein Alternatives, which is developing a test for the detection of lung cancer using saliva or blood samples; Zataca Systems, which is working on artificial thermal imaging and machine learning technology for breast cancer detection; and MiMARK Diagnostics, a company developing an innovative device to improve diagnostic effectiveness in high-risk women and optimize clinical workflow in endometrial cancer detection, contributing to more accurate and earlier diagnoses.
Beyond business initiatives, CDTI Innovación also participates in projects of high technological complexity, such as the development of Spain’s first hadron therapy research infrastructure, based on a compact carbon-ion linear accelerator, with an investment of €21.8 million. This cutting-edge therapeutic technology has high potential for the treatment of certain types of cancer through high-precision therapies.
Likewise, CDTI Innovación promotes advanced healthcare technologies through venture capital–based financing instruments, such as the INNVIERTE program, which aims to foster business innovation by supporting investment in technology-based or innovative companies. A recent example is the co-investment in the company Ona Therapeutics, dedicated to the development of innovative therapies for the treatment of advanced cancer using antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs).
Through these actions, CDTI Innovación reinforces its commitment to promoting technologies with high social and health impact, channeling public resources so that Spanish companies can transform scientific knowledge into effective clinical and commercial solutions, accelerate the transfer of knowledge to the market, and contribute to the development of disruptive solutions against cancer, in line with the priorities of the Spanish science, technology, and innovation system.
