CDTI Innovación awards €127 million in grants to Spanish companies approved under the EU IPCEI Health Med4Cure project
CDTI Innovación, a Public Business Entity (E.P.E.) under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, has published the final resolution for funding Spanish companies participating in the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Med4Cure. Grants totaling €126.9 million have been approved. This initiative aligns with Spain’s commitment to strengthening the resilience of the health sector, boosting sustainable innovation and positioning national companies at the forefront of European pharmaceutical research and production.
Med4Cure, the first IPCEI of its kind in the healthcare sector, received the European Commission’s approval in May 2024. Its goal is to tackle strategic challenges — from developing advanced therapies for rare diseases and antimicrobial resistance to adopting more sustainable and efficient production processes.
Spain joined five other Member States — Belgium, Slovakia, France, Hungary and Italy — notifying the participation of 13 companies in 14 projects, including one direct participant (Sylentis) and five associated companies: Laboratorios Farmacéuticos Rovi, S.A., Laboratorios Reig Jofre, S.A., Medichem, S.A., Minoryx Therapeutics, S.L. and Oryzon Genomics, S.A.

This funding call, financed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and aligned with Spain’s PERTE Salud de Vanguardia, reflects the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities’ strategic commitment to support and boost Spain’s biopharmaceutical ecosystem. Through CDTI Innovación, the initiative aims to:
Implementing these projects will mark a qualitative leap for the Spanish and European pharmaceutical value chain, creating an estimated 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across the EU. The expected knowledge transfer will stimulate future research, new companies and innovation clusters, particularly in the Community of Madrid and other regions with high R&D density.
The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and CDTI Innovación remain committed to supporting companies during execution, certification and disbursement of funds, ensuring full compliance with the European Commission’s objectives and milestones under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. With this initiative, Spain strengthens its leadership in IPCEI Med4Cure, contributing to health sovereignty, the green transition of the pharmaceutical industry and citizens’ wellbeing.
