Bankinter Investment consolidates its position as one of the most relevant alternative investment platforms in the market through two strategic moves that expand its capabilities, increase its international reach, and strengthen its direct investment model and sector diversification.
First, it has taken a decisive step to integrate its management company with Plenium Partners, a partner since 2017 and a benchmark in renewable energy, energy transition, and social infrastructure. Secondly, it has agreed to acquire a significant stake in the European management company Access Capital Partners, a partner since 2019 and one of the most recognized European managers in alternative assets, particularly in infrastructure and private equity.
These two operations reinforce the leadership of the direct investment platform in alternative assets in Iberia and accelerate its pan-European expansion.
Integration with Plenium Partners: consolidating leadership in direct investment in Iberia
Bankinter Investment SGIIC has agreed to integrate with Plenium Partners SGEIC, a top-tier independent Spanish management firm with 19 years of experience and strong specialization in key sectors such as renewable energy —where it is one of the largest independent operators in the country— circular economy, and social infrastructure, including student residences.
The firm has an outstanding team and track record, as well as significant market recognition, both during its partnership with Bankinter Investment and in its previous experience as a partner of major international institutional investors.
As a result of the integration, a stronger joint platform emerges, larger in size and with reinforced capacity to lead direct alternative investment in Southern Europe.
This operation culminates a successful alliance initiated in 2017 and allows the unification of the teams, assets, and capabilities of both firms under a single structure, with investor-committed capital exceeding €5.3 billion and total invested assets exceeding €7.8 billion, with high diversification across 11 sectors and presence in 14 countries.
Under the terms of the transaction, the parent company of Plenium Partners SGEIC will become part of Bankinter Investment SGIIC’s capital with a 27.5% stake, aligning the interests of both partners in a shared project.
The closing of the transaction is subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
Acquisition of a significant stake in Access Capital Partners: pan-European push
Additionally, Bankinter Investment SGIIC has reached an agreement to acquire a significant stake in Access Capital Partners (ACP), one of the leading independent alternative investment managers in Europe, specifically in the infrastructure and private equity sectors, with currently around €9 billion of client-committed capital and presence in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
The operation marks a milestone in the company’s international expansion strategy and strengthens a strategic relationship both firms have maintained since 2019 as partners in infrastructure and private equity vehicles, while also recognizing the track record and talent of the Access Capital Partners team, which has earned significant loyalty from its international institutional investor base over many years.
With this entry into ACP’s capital, subject to the relevant regulatory approvals, Bankinter Investment advances its goal of building a pan-European alternative investment platform capable of competing in scale, specialization, and access to deal flow across Europe. The alliance also accelerates the launch of new pan-European investment vehicles and expands the range of available strategies, which will undoubtedly serve its domestic investor base and now also international institutional investors.
From a governance perspective, Access Capital Partners will continue to operate with full management independence, with the management team retaining the majority of voting rights and receiving full support from Bankinter Investment SGIIC.
Bankinter Investment SGIIC retains 64% of ACP’s economic rights.
Strategic vision
Both operations highlight Bankinter Investment’s differentiated model over the last 10 years, based on co-investment in projects, multi-sector specialization, direct investment in real assets, and rigorous risk-return management. This approach has proven its ability to attract investors and offer solid and diversified investment opportunities over the past decade.
Combining a leading direct alternative investment platform in Iberia, at a particularly attractive time as an investment focus given the structural advantages of Spain and Portugal, with a strengthened presence in Europe, will expand access to investment opportunities, further diversify strategies and geographies, accelerate growth, and reach a broader universe of investors.
These two operations currently represent more than €14 billion of investor-committed capital, over 15,000 clients, and high diversification across sectors and geographies.
All of this combines talent and specialization, integrates top-level teams, and reinforces a model based on expert knowledge under a shared vision.
With these strategic moves, Bankinter Investment consolidates its structure and strengthens its ambition to continue leading the development of alternative investment, bringing this asset class closer to an increasingly broad investor base and contributing to the development of the real economy in Spain, Portugal, and Europe.
