In the context of the Web Summit Lisbon 2023, Cleantech For Iberia has launched a coalition with key players who have made a firm commitment to clean technologies in the region. The members of this coalition include investors such as Axon, which has demonstrated its commitment to achieving zero emissions through its ClimateTech strategy, Seaya and Adara; universities such as IE University; and innovators such as Build to Zero, a company recently invested in by Axon, FertigHy and Rega Energy, among others.

Building on the success of previous initiatives like Cleantech for Europe, the coalition aims to achieve net-zero emissions on the Peninsula, making it the clean energy hub of the European Union. Its objective is to create a collaborative system that speeds up the deployment of these technologies and accelerates the implementation of more ambitious climate and industrial solutions.

Market situation:

The many challenges the world is facing, from climate change to wars and geopolitical situations, have prompted the world’s major economies to innovate in the field of clean technologies. Although the United States is the leader in terms of investment, Europe is taking considerable steps to develop a strong cleantech economy. According to Cleantech for Iberia’s investment data, 676 million pounds were invested in cleantech in 2022, a significant increase compared to the preceding five years.

With plentiful clean energy sources such as wind and solar, a developing green hydrogen economy and a solid industrial base already in place, Spain and Portugal have substantial competitive advantages in cutting-edge sectors such as green steel, green fertilisers and long-term energy storage.

Luis Castañeda, Partner and head of Sustainability, comments: ´The key to advancing the energy transition and achieving net-zero goals is the collaboration of all ecosystem players. Iberia has the necessary resources to lead the clean industry in Europe and become a global hub for energy transition innovation. However, we require investment, technology, strong policies and powerful partnerships to accelerate this. We believe that Cleantech for Iberia is a pivotal initiative to stimulate collaboration in this sector.´

Bianca Dragomir, Cleantech for Iberia Director, comments: `For the first time ever, the Iberian cleantech community has joined forces to speak with one voice. It marks the start of an exciting new chapter to establish the Iberian Peninsula as Europe’s next clean industrial hub´.
