Alantra has acted as exclusive sell-side advisor to Rolwind Renovables on the sale of a portfolio of standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects to ENGIE.
The transaction comprises two projects located in southern Spain, in Palmosilla (Cádiz) and Cerrillo (Málaga), with a combined capacity of approximately 278 MW. The facilities incorporate grid-forming inverter technology and are designed to operate in four-hour charge and discharge cycles. They will support the integration of renewable energy while enhancing power system stability and providing a range of balancing and ancillary services, including frequency control, peak demand management, and grid use optimization.
The portfolio represents one of the largest and most advanced standalone energy storage platforms currently permitted in Spain, in a market where battery storage remains a renewable technology at an early stage of development and continues to require growing investor familiarity.
Manuel Fernández, Managing Director at Alantra, said: “This transaction marks an important milestone in the development of standalone battery storage in Spain, as the renewable energy market evolves towards solutions that increasingly require investment in storage, whether standalone or hybridized with solar and wind assets. We are pleased to have supported Rolwind through a complex process that required extensive engagement with investors to navigate an evolving regulatory framework and emerging business models. We leveraged our in-depth understanding of the technology, working closely together with our Energy Transition experts. The outcome reflects both the strategic value of the assets and the increasing importance of energy storage in enabling the energy transition.”
This transaction reinforces Alantra’s strong track record in the Energy & Power Infrastructure sector, having recently advised Solaria on the Generia LandCo partnership with infrastructure asset manager Stonepeak, and Iberdrola on the sale of a renewable power portfolio Renewable Power International.
