Quantix Edge Security has formalized its incorporation as a company in Murcia and held its first Board of Directors meeting. With this final administrative step, an initiative gets underway that plans to mobilize €40 million in investment, of which €19.6 million will be contributed by the Spanish Government, entering the company’s capital through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT).
The project was created with the goal of establishing an engineering center in the Region of Murcia to design, validate, and characterize microcontrollers and secure elements for key sectors such as automotive and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Quantix Edge Security emerges from the industrial partnership of four companies specialized in technology and cybersecurity. Two are Spanish firms: TProtege and Odin Solutions, a spin-off from the University of Murcia; and two are international: the Swiss company WiseKey and the French firm SealsQ.
Projections for this new company indicate that the future center could generate 152 highly qualified direct jobs within five years. In addition, it is estimated that the total number of indirect and induced jobs in support, maintenance, and logistics will exceed 450. As for the expected fiscal and economic impact, the contribution to GDP is estimated at €793 million by the fifth year.
First Board of Directors Meeting
Following the notarized signing of the company’s incorporation, Quantix Edge Security held its first Board of Directors meeting, attended by the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz; the Rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján; the Director General of SETT, Javier Ponce; WiseKey and SealsQ executives Carlos Moreira, John O’Hara, and Bernard Vian; Odin Solutions CEO, José Trigueros; and University of Murcia researcher Antonio Skarmeta.
Board members were then appointed. Representing OdinS and TProtege, José Luján and José Trigueros were named delegates. Representing SETT, José María García Orois and Fernando Javier Valdés will sit on the board. On behalf of WiseKey and SealsQ, Carlos Moreira and John O’Hara will join as members.
Boosting technological sovereignty
With this investment in Quantix and its incorporation, the Government of Spain takes another step in its strategy to strengthen industrial initiatives in strategic sectors such as semiconductors and cybersecurity. The initiative is aligned with the objectives of the PERTE Chip program, aimed at reducing dependence on external suppliers and reinforcing Spanish and European industrial autonomy and technological sovereignty.
The emergence of this company has been made possible by knowledge transfer generated through various investments from the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service to the University of Murcia (UMU) in recent years. More than €3.25 million has been allocated to projects for the development of new technologies and intelligent management of threats and security countermeasures, in addition to other grants of up to €356,763 to Odin Solutions for experimental developments.
The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, stated:
“Quantix will contribute to Spain’s strategic sovereignty in key areas such as semiconductors and cybersecurity. For the Region of Murcia, it will become a milestone in knowledge transfer from the university to the business sector, and a model to follow in promoting talent and quality employment. The Government of Spain has been investing in research for years to generate added value and provide quality job opportunities throughout the country.”
For his part, Carlos Moreira, founder and CEO of WISeKey, stressed the strategic importance, noting: “In today’s technological world, control over the semiconductor supply is not just an economic advantage, it is a national security imperative. Quantix Edges empowers Spain to establish a localized cybersecurity and semiconductor personalization hub, ensuring uninterrupted access to these critical components.”
Finally, José Trigueros, CEO of OdinS, emphasized: “The Cybersecurity and Semiconductor Personalization Center of the Region of Murcia includes a comprehensive solution covering secure elements, cryptographic keys, and hardware security modules. The initiative is not just about technology transfer; it includes full provision of hardware and software, training, and ongoing support. This holistic approach is designed to strengthen industries such as automotive, aerospace, and healthcare, where secure and reliable microchips are indispensable.”
