The Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), attached to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function , will invest more than 600,000 euros in the Spanish company Robopedics to promote the development of an innovative bionic technology applied to mobility and rehabilitation of people with severe motor disabilities .
SETT's investment, part of the agreement signed by both parties, is earmarked for the industrialization and market launch of Awake , a disruptive solution for robotically assisting a paralyzed leg . Unlike other similar systems that require robotic support for both legs, Awake acts only on the affected leg. The device weighs less than 6 kilograms, less than half the weight of similar devices, has a more compact and easier-to-apply design, and its final price is 80% lower .
Furthermore, it incorporates gait phase detection, weight transfer, and fall prevention algorithms , allowing the assistance to be synchronized with the user's natural movement and ensuring greater safety. Thus, the machine actively cooperates with the user, representing an innovative and disruptive advancement in this type of solution. The algorithms are based on an artificial intelligence model trained on data from six healthy subjects, using examples of seated postures and falls.
Robopedics, a company founded in Barcelona in 2021, offers advanced bionic solutions that allow people with significant mobility problems resulting from a stroke—specifically those affected by hemiplegia or hemiparesis and who are wheelchair-bound—to regain the ability to walk. It is estimated that more than one hundred million people worldwide have survived a stroke, of whom more than twenty million use a wheelchair.
The project, part of SETT's public-private partnership strategy, represents a total capital increase of €1.7 million for Robopedics . This initiative reinforces the Spanish government's commitment to implementing advanced technologies and digitalization in the healthcare sector to enhance its efficiency and improve patients' quality of life.
Furthermore, the operation contributes to strengthening the productive and scientific fabric , through stable collaborations with technology centers, universities and reference hospitals (Biomechanics Institute of Valencia, LEITAT, Hospital Clínic, Institut Guttmann, Hospital del Mar, among others) and the generation of qualified employment, close to 200 jobs between 2025 and 2032.
SETT carries out this operation through the Next Tech facility , promoted by the State Secretariat for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence and with funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan ( Next Generation Funds of the European Union ), whose objective is to boost the financing of startups and scale-ups in the technology sector.
In addition, SETT manages two more financial instruments to boost the technological business ecosystem: PERTE Chip , dedicated to microelectronics and semiconductors, and Spain Audiovisual Hub , which promotes the digitization of the audiovisual sector.
