The Council of Ministers has authorized the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service to invest €19.6 million in the Spanish company Quantix, through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT).
With this operation, the Government of Spain reinforces its commitment to cybersecurity and microelectronics through the creation of the company Quantix Edge Security, which will establish a technology center for cybersecurity and semiconductor customization in the Region of Murcia.
This new company, in which SETT will hold a 49% stake, is a joint initiative with four companies: the Spanish firms OdinS (a spin-off of the University of Murcia) and TProtege, as well as the Swiss company WiseKey and the French firm SealsQ, all of which are specialized in developing transformative and cutting-edge technologies.
As a result of this investment, a technology and personalization services center for secure elements (cryptographic keys, security modules, certificates) will be built in the Region of Murcia, along with facilities for microchip production, customization, and packaging. The site will include a cleanroom, a research and R&D facility in microelectronics, and a wafer testing lab. The project plans to create 40 jobs in the first two years, 70 by the third year, and 152 by the fifth year, with the goal of reaching 250 employees by the eighth year of operations.
The emergence of this company has been driven by various investments made by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service in the University of Murcia in recent years. These include more than €3.25 million for projects developing new technologies and intelligent threat and countermeasure management systems; several 6G R&D projects with grants exceeding €1.6 million to the university; and a €356,763 grant to Odin Solutions for experimental developments.
This operation not only strengthens Spain’s cybersecurity, enhancing its capabilities in a critical area for citizens and businesses, but also promotes quality employment, research, and technological advancement in the Region of Murcia, by fostering a vibrant economic and social ecosystem around this new company.
The creation of Quantix Edge Security helps centralize part of the value chain in a single location, reducing dependency on non-European suppliers for microchip design and manufacturing—key components in many industrial sectors such as computing, healthcare, automotive, agriculture, and telecommunications.
Moreover, this investment addresses the growing challenge of cybersecurity in an ultra-connected world and aligns with EU-level initiatives such as the European Cyber Resilience Act and national projects led by INCIBE (the National Cybersecurity Institute), which aim to make connected systems increasingly secure for consumers.
Due to evolving cybersecurity regulations being standardized across national agencies, Quantix’s target market focuses on post-quantum resilient products, which will be critical by 2030 for both government applications (e.g., passports, access control, defense) and sensitive private-sector use cases (e.g., cloud storage authentication, web transactions, medical records).
María González Veracruz, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, stated:
“After months of work, we are making this great announcement a reality—bringing to the Region of Murcia a world-leading center, a key industry such as semiconductors, and an activity as crucial in the current global context as the customization of cybersecure microchips. This investment adds to what the Government of Spain has already been doing in the Region of Murcia in terms of research and cybersecurity, which is already generating wealth, added value, and highly skilled jobs.”
