In the Paris Agreements, nearly 200 countries committed to take action to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To achieve this, we must continue to reduce our current CO2 emissions, but it will also be essential to start removing the CO2 that is already in the air. The International Energy Agency (#IEA) estimates that, by that date, it will be necessary to have the capacity to remove about eight gigatons of CO2 per year.

In this challenging context, Direct Air Capture (#DAC) technologies are a great ally, as they allow air to be captured and filtered to separate CO2 from other gases. In a domestic simile, they are like a "vacuum cleaner" to clean the atmosphere of carbon dioxide, the main cause of global warming.

For that reason, we are very proud to announce #RepsolVenturing's recent investment in DACMa GmbH. We are convinced that this technology solution helps us get closer to the #decarbonization goals we have set for ourselves at Repsol.

This Hamburg-based startup develops a DAC technology, called #BlancAir, which involves filtering atmospheric air by applying electricity and heat to separate CO2, through a unique contactor design containing a solid absorbent. After this process, the renewed air is emitted back into the atmosphere.

The alliance with DACMA, with whom we already worked on several projects at Repsol Sinopec Brasil provides Repsol Tech Lab with a partner with whom it can:

✔ Explore and develop next generations of materials (solid adsorbents) for DAC to be able to implement this technology at Repsol as soon as possible and accelerate our transition to a more sustainable industry.

✔ Boosting the production of #SyntheticFuels from CO2 captured with DAC as a source of sustainable carbon and the use of waste heat.

Undoubtedly, great news and the confirmation that science and technology are capable of providing complex and imaginative solutions to the challenges we face. However, science is made by people, so I want to thank Mica Taborga Claure, Jacobo Canal and Jordi Pedrola, our carbon management experts at Tech Lab; as well as Amaia De Manueles Saenz, Ander Zubizarreta Navarro and Carmen Moreno Morales, from my #RepsolVenturing team, for accompanying and guiding us on this journey, who, together with our colleagues in Brazil, Jose Javier Salinero Rodriguez and Cassiane Nunes and, of course, Jörg Spitzner, from DACMA have made this very relevant operation possible for us.
