Ramón Cerdeiras, founding partner of Portobello Capital and one of the pioneers of venture capital in Spain, passed away today in Madrid at the age of 67 after a long illness.
In the words of Iñigo Sánchez-Asiain, Juan Luis Ramirez and Luis Peñarrocha, founding partners of Portobello Capital, "Ramón was always a calm and thoughtful pillar of strength. He was a quiet man who never lost his cool in the face of adversity. His training as a State Attorney gave him an orderly, confident and precise approach to the unfolding of events. And he always had a unique and distinctive way of seeing things."
With a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and a State Solicitor on leave of absence, Ramón Cerdeiras began his career in the venture capital sector in 1990 as a partner at Inversiones Ibersuizas—the seed of Portobello Capital—where he was in charge of the legal department.
Ramón Cerdeiras was a member of various boards of directors of companies in which Portobello Capital had investments, including Mediterránea, Ramón Sabater, TRISON, Blue Sea, USA Group, Evolutio, Caiba and Legálitas. He was also secretary of the boards of directors of Laboratorios AGQ, Condis Supermercats, Elmubas, Evolutio, Poligof, Supera and Serveo, and was chairman of the CTC Group.
In addition to his work as a founding partner of Portobello Capital, Cerdeiras has also served as a professor at the Instituto de Empresa, a member of the Civil and Commercial Arbitration Court, the Advisory Committee of the National Securities Market Commission and President of the Spanish Venture Capital Association (SPAINCAP).
