PLOCAN (Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands) continues strengthening its role as a key infrastructure for marine innovation in 2026. So far this year, 11 new projects have been awarded, with a total funding volume of €65.6 million and approximately €5.4 million in funding allocated to PLOCAN.

Altogether, these initiatives bring together 250 partners, with a strong international presence: ten of the projects are funded by the European Union and one by national funding sources. In addition, PLOCAN is leading two of these initiatives.

Regarding activity at the test site, several actions have been carried out in 2026. Within the PLOTEC initiative, the Global OTEC project has completed the installation of the cold-water intake pipe for the OTEC Don prototype, which had already been deployed in October 2025. Meanwhile, QUALITAS has validated AI-based solutions for smart coastal management under the PORTS 4.0 programme, while the GEORGE project has tested new underwater communication technologies at sea.

Furthermore, the installation of the floating offshore wind prototype from the WHEEL project, led by Esteyco, is scheduled for this year. This further reinforces PLOCAN’s position as a reference environment for the development and validation of advanced marine technologies.
