Naturgy has recognized the Seville-based startup Biomixing as the winner of the fourth edition of its business incubation program Connecting Energy, an initiative launched by the company to support entrepreneurial projects that bring innovation to the energy sector. Biomixing was chosen as the best project after a six-month incubation period, during which twelve selected projects were supported from among all the applications received.
Biomixing’s project, which received a €25,000 prize to further develop its solution, involves a disruptive mixing system for bioreactors, with applications in sectors such as healthcare and energy. In the energy sector, this technology can be used to reduce processing times and energy consumption in current biogas plants.
As the winning project, Biomixing will now collaborate with Naturgy on a pilot plant to test its technology. Preliminary tests suggest it could reduce energy consumption by 50% in renewable gas generation plants.
Jesús Chapado, Head of Innovation at Naturgy, highlighted the potential of Biomixing’s project to optimize processes in biomethane plants and emphasized the value of the Connecting Energy program as a driver of sustainable innovation. “Our goal is to develop an ecosystem that enables collaborative and open innovation, capable of responding quickly to signals of change in the environment,” Chapado stated.
For Inés Herrero, Founder of Biomixing, “having a demonstrative pilot plant is a major milestone for us, one that will mark a turning point in the biogas sector and allow us to continue applying our technology in the field of biosolutions.”
Biomixing: Winner of the 4th edition of ‘Connecting Energy’
Biomixing was launched in 2022 as a spin-off from the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics at the University of Seville, and it focuses on optimizing bioreactors.
Its technology significantly reduces processing time and energy consumption in biogas plants. It can be applied in both new facilities—by incorporating more efficient digester designs—and existing plants, by replacing their current mixing systems.
A commitment to sustainable innovation
The Connecting Energy program connects Naturgy professionals with startups developing businesses related to the energy transition. Through a six-month mentoring program, Naturgy experts share their knowledge and diverse experience with entrepreneurs, guiding them on sector needs and supporting them with tailored training to help them develop their business plan, define a growth strategy, and gain the momentum needed to achieve their goals.
The winner, selected from the mentored projects, receives an additional €25,000 in support to validate their solution through a pilot project within the company.
Across the four editions of Connecting Energy, Naturgy has supported a wide variety of projects—from technologies focused on operational efficiency to sustainable mobility solutions. The platform has incubated over 40 startups through a team of nearly 50 mentors and specialists with experience across all areas of the energy sector value chain, helping them develop business plans, build proof of concepts, and prototype their solutions.
In the first edition, the winning project was Clevergy, a platform for energy retailers and installers that improves customer relationships and centralizes operations. Evorgy, a digital platform aimed at operations and maintenance for solar sector installers, won the second edition. Last year, the award went to the startup Calpech, which developed iron nanoparticles for environmental decontamination and energy recovery applications.
Naturgy’s goal with this program is to help and support entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs in consolidating their solutions with a positive environmental impact, reflecting the company’s commitment to innovation and society.
