HealthTech Innovations, a spin-off from Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol dedicated to developing technological solutions to optimize nursing work in surgical areas, has closed an €800,000 funding round led by Grow Venture Partners through the FITA Fund, with participation from ICF via its spin-off support instrument IFEM Prova de Concepte.
This investment will accelerate the development of its modular platform based on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics. The platform will automate critical tasks in the operating room —such as counting surgical instruments and gauzes— and will allow healthcare professionals to be freed from repetitive tasks so they can focus on patient care.
The modular platform is composed of several modules. The first module, MedVision Pro, is an AI and computer vision-based surgical instrument counter capable of recognizing instruments from different surgical specialties through image recognition. HealthTech Innovations has developed its own artificial intelligence and image recognition model, trained with over one million photographs. MedVision Pro is compatible with the main traceability systems already in use in hospitals, reducing the time needed to handle surgical instruments when preparing trays for surgeries by more than half.
In addition to MedVision Pro, HealthTech is developing a gauze counter using RFID technology, a smart table, and a robotic arm for instrument organization. All these modules will be managed through a client platform that enables hospitals to control each device and access multiple performance metrics.
In its commitment to innovation, HealthTech Innovations also offers a launcher for immersive virtual reality experiences to multiple VR headsets —ideal for both patient entertainment and relaxation in healthcare environments, as well as for medical training (HealthPro VR). The launcher allows users to select a piece of content and deploy it to one or several VR headsets simultaneously.
“Our vision is clear: to enhance surgical safety and efficiency by reducing errors and improving both staff and patient experience,” says Sergio Gifra, CEO of HealthTech Innovations.
The technology has already been validated in real environments such as Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and at various sites of the Banc de Sang i Teixits across hospitals including Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona, Clínic, Sant Pau and Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, Josep Trueta in Girona, and Joan XXIII in Tarragona, among others. In a European market estimated at €24 billion, the company aims to position itself as a global leader in the digital transformation of operating rooms.
“We are motivated to invest in this pioneering project that applies advanced automation to an environment traditionally underserved by technological innovation. This initiative perfectly aligns with our vision to empower early-stage companies developing cutting-edge technologies that have a direct societal impact,” said Francisco Badía, founder of Grow Venture Partners.
“Our goal is to reduce the stress of healthcare teams and help them focus more on patient care,” added Dr. Joan Francesc Julián, medical director and founder of HealthTech Innovations.
