COFIDES has granted a €175,000 co-investment loan to Supracafé, a leading company in the coffee trade, to support its sustainable expansion in Colombia. The financing will help improve operations across the 120 hectares of coffee plantations managed by the company in Cauca, a key region for thousands of producers whose livelihoods depend directly on coffee cultivation. The total investment for the project amounts to €250,000.
The financing, provided through the Fund for SME Investment Operations (FONPYME), will be used to set up a collection center equipped to receive, classify, and store coffee, as well as to acquire machinery that will optimize the coffee production process.
In addition, the investment will enable Supracafé Colombia to advance its transformation into a purchasing hub, optimizing its value chain and enhancing the quality of the 100% Arabica coffee that the company exports to Spain for roasting, packaging, and commercialization.
With this operation, COFIDES contributes to consolidating a sustainable business model that generates rural employment, fosters stability in vulnerable areas, and strengthens the competitiveness of small producers in a sector that is strategic for the country’s economic and social development. Supracafé’s project places special emphasis on the hiring, inclusion, and empowerment of local women, many of whom have been affected by the armed conflict in the region.
Furthermore, Supracafé Colombia has developed the first Coffee Technology Park in Colombia (TECNICAFÉ), a pioneering platform for innovation, technology transfer, and productive strengthening that already benefits more than 35,000 producers and 500 coffee-growing families, reinforcing the sustainability of the sector.
This is the second operation in which COFIDES and Supracafé have collaborated, following their partnership in 2017 under a project for which COFIDES was recognized by UNCTAD for promoting impact investment.
According to Miguel Ángel Ladero, Corporate Director of the Investment Department at COFIDES, “this operation reflects our commitment to supporting Spanish SMEs and the agri-food sector in Latin America. It also strengthens the agrotech ecosystem and contributes to the socioeconomic development of local communities, especially women.”
Ricardo Oteros, CEO of Supracafé, stated that “for SUPRACAFÉ it is very important to once again have the support of COFIDES in the Cauca project in Colombia, a strategic initiative for the company that we have been developing together with local coffee producers for 16 years, focused on producing high-quality coffee with a strong emphasis on innovation and impact, where social and environmental sustainability are essential components.”
