CDTI Innovación, the innovation agency of Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, has launched the 2026 call for Science and Innovation Missions, an initiative aimed at supporting major strategic pre-competitive research projects focused on fostering impactful research that provides solutions to cross-cutting and strategic challenges facing the Spanish economy. The programme seeks to strengthen companies’ technological and knowledge base while promoting public-private cooperation in R&D&I.
The 2026 call for proposals has a total budget of €60 million in grants, of which at least €20 million will be allocated to the challenge mission “Towards a More Efficient and Resilient Aeronautics Sector”, and €5 million to the mission “Women’s Health within the Framework of Biomedical Research Focused on Diseases with Greater Impact on Women”.
Over its previous five editions, the Science and Innovation Missions programme of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has funded 168 projects through the CDTI, with €467 million in grants and a total mobilised budget of €695 million, involving 688 companies (450 of them SMEs) and more than 140 knowledge-generating centres.
Challenge Missions for the 2026 Call
For the 2026 edition, and following the co-design and participatory process on which the programme is based, the CDTI has identified seven missions aligned with the key national challenges outlined in the 2024–2027 Strategic Plan:
The selection of these missions was carried out through a process of dialogue and co-design with public and private stakeholders from the Science, Technology and Innovation System, coordinated and led by the CDTI through three sessions focused on defining and refining the call. More than 360 participants attended, including representatives from technology platforms and business associations.
As a new feature compared with previous editions, participants were invited to assess and prioritise the proposed missions, giving the selection process a particularly strong participatory foundation. The process also incorporated industrial, socioeconomic and strategic priorities identified by different ministries.
