Barcelona-based BASE4 Biosciences has raised a $1 million pre-seed round to advance the development of a multi-omic platform designed to infer the biological state and age of 47 tissues from a single blood sample. The approach relies on sex-specific models intended to capture biological variability that has historically been excluded from clinical research.
The round was supported by Baobab Ventures, Kfund, Itnig, Masia, and a group of angel investors.
The company’s platform integrates transcriptomics, genomics, and artificial intelligence to analyse more than 15,000 genes and 330 metabolic pathways. It translates molecular signals into organ-level health insights across nine functional domains, including hormonal, reproductive (ovarian, vaginal and uterine), cardiovascular, cognitive and mammary health. According to the company, this enables the detection of transcriptomic changes associated with functional decline before symptoms emerge or standard diagnostics identify abnormalities.
Women’s health is positioned as a core pillar of the company’s scientific thesis rather than a secondary focus. BASE4 highlights the historical exclusion of women from clinical trials until the 1990s as a structural gap in medical research, where biological variability was often treated as noise rather than meaningful data. This has contributed to persistent disparities, including later diagnosis in women across hundreds of diseases, accelerated ovarian tissue ageing compared to other organs, and high failure rates in IVF cycles for women over 35.
The company is launching three initial clinical programmes: fertility and women’s health, focused on ovarian biology and menopause-related changes; preventive health, aimed at early detection of molecular signs of tissue dysfunction; and pharmaceutical and clinical research applications, including pharmacotranscriptomics to identify early tissue-level toxicity signals.
BASE4 has received more than €7 million in total research funding and is led by molecular biologist Dr. Jose Manuel Soria. Its multidisciplinary clinical team includes specialists in gynaecology, reproductive medicine, and functional medicine. The company operates between Barcelona and Riyadh
