The startup, winner of the 2020 Ingenia Energy Challenge, takes another step forward on its path towards the energy transition by publishing its innovative proposal in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy.

At Enagás Emprende, we celebrate a new milestone for B-Hydrogen, the winning startup of the 2020 edition of our Ingenia Energy Challenge program, which has published an article in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy presenting the results of its research to produce green hydrogen from brewer’s spent grain.

This work, led by Celia Navarro Pedrero —chemical and environmental engineer at Enagás and co-founder of B-Hydrogen— in collaboration with a team of researchers, explores the technical feasibility of transforming this abundant by-product of the brewing industry into high-purity renewable hydrogen through a process of gasification and palladium membrane purification.

The study showed that, under optimal gasification conditions, it is possible to generate a synthesis gas with up to 45% hydrogen and achieve the purity required by the ISO-14687 standard for use in fuel cells. The pilot-scale analysis also confirmed the stability and good performance of the developed membranes, paving the way for larger-scale testing and advanced configurations of reactors with integrated membranes.

Beyond its technical impact, B-Hydrogen’s proposal aligns with the principles of the circular economy, offering a dual contribution: giving new value to an industrial waste and advancing decarbonization through clean technologies.

At Enagás Emprende, we are proud to have supported Celia and her team since the beginning of this entrepreneurial journey. This achievement reinforces our commitment to supporting ideas that combine innovation, sustainability, and talent, driving solutions that transform industries and accelerate the energy transition.

About B-Hydrogen

B-Hydrogen was born within the framework of the Ingenia Energy Challenge 2020, with the aim of producing renewable hydrogen from agricultural and industrial by-products. Today, it continues to mature its proposal to become a benchmark startup in the sector, with the potential to generate a positive impact both in the brewing industry and in the energy system.
