YPlasma, a deep tech startup pioneer in developing cutting-edge plasma actuators spun-out from INTA (Spanish Space Agency) with the help of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona foundation, has announced it has secured $2.5 million in seed funding. The round was led by deep tech venture capital Faber, with participation from the global VC firm SOSV. The funding will support the expansion of YPlasma’s R&D, which operations out of HAX (SOSV’s hard tech startup development program and lab space in Newark, NJ) and Madrid, Spain, as well as fast-track the commercialization of its compact, silent cooling technology aimed at high-performance electronics and the semiconductor industry.
With the rapid rise of AI-driven computing, traditional cooling methods are increasingly inadequate to cope with escalating thermal demands across chips, data centers, and critical infrastructure. YPlasma addresses this challenge with its patented DBD-type plasma actuators that generate ionic wind in a solid-state, ultra-compact form. Unlike conventional fans or liquid cooling systems, these actuators contain no moving parts and require minimal space delivering a highly efficient, scalable thermal solution ideal for enhancing thermal management in chips, electronic devices, data centers, and other high-performance environments.
Beyond cooling, YPlasma’s technology can also influence aerodynamics (increasing wind power generation or reducing aircraft fuel consumption), generate propulsion (using atmospheric gases as propellant for VLEO satellites or drones), enable sanitization (for vertical farming), and activate media to alter material properties (producing plasma activated water with better cooling capacity), opening up a wide range of high-impact applications across different industries. The first commercial integration, expected by the end of 2025, will target consumer electronics such as laptops and similar devices.
David Garcia, YPlasma co-founder and CEO: “We’re delighted to partner with Faber and SOSV to unlock the full potential of plasma actuator technology across multiple industries. With this funding, we’re bringing a fundamentally new approach to thermal management and flow control to market—one that’s solid-state, scalable, and rooted in deep science. Plasma actuators can unlock efficiency gains across industries, from electronics to aerospace, and we’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what’s possible”
Niklas Körner, Partner at Faber: “YPlasma’s solid-state approach to flow control and heat management brings genuine innovation to a space long overdue for disruption. The combination of scientific depth, engineering talent, and global ambition made this an easy decision for us. We’re thrilled to support their journey.”
Founded in Barcelona, the company now operates across Spain and the US, with a clear focus on semiconductors and high-performance electronics as its entry market. The pan-European and US-based team continues to gain traction with potential industry partners, and the new investment will help accelerate the path to commercial deployment.
