The Lisbon-based venture capital fund Ventures.eu has made its inaugural investment from Fund I by leading a £1 million (€1.15 million approximately) funding round in Spot Ship, a SaaS platform that modernizes global ship chartering. The round also saw participation from Improbable CEO Herman Narula, sector-focused investors, Tradeworks.vc, and Marcel Kind.

The UK-based startup Spot Ship is transforming maritime logistics by reducing ship chartering times from six days to just two hours, leveraging cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning for brokers, charterers, shipowners, and operators. The company stood out in Ventures.eu’s portfolio for its ability to solve one of the most persistent challenges in the shipping industry—data and efficiency—with market-leading accuracy.

Ventures.eu has leveraged its extensive corporate network to introduce Spot Ship to leading shipping companies and industry experts. Unlike traditional VC due diligence, which mainly focuses on existing clients, Ventures.eu incorporates high-value potential new clients into the process. This approach generates deeper market adoption insights while simultaneously accelerating the startup’s commercial growth. The impact was immediate: several major shipping companies became clients, new co-investors joined the round following these introductions, and the market clearly validated Ventures.eu’s investment thesis.

“We are thrilled to support Spot Ship as our inaugural investment,” said Fernando Ferreira, Managing Partner at Ventures.eu. “Our mission is to identify Europe’s most promising, market-ready innovations and help them grow by opening doors to the right corporate partners. Spot Ship has demonstrated exceptional technology, strong execution, and a clear opportunity to become a category leader.”

James Kellett, Founder and CEO of Spot Ship, added: “Our mission is to bring 21st-century speed to a century-old industry. Ventures.eu shares that vision and has added value from day one. Their ability to bridge a startup with the world’s shipping giants has already resulted in new clients and investors, and we are thrilled to have them lead this round as we modernize ship chartering worldwide.”

Niklas Holck, Managing Partner at Tradeworks.vc, added: “We see Spot Ship as the information and action system for ship repair, cargo, and insurance. Its AI-driven intelligence, combined with a human factor guarantee, delivers best-in-class data accuracy, turning unstructured emails into actionable intelligence. Coupled with an incredibly dedicated team, this provides a solid foundation for expansion into new markets.”

Herman Narula, Founder and CEO of Improbable, commented: “Shipping is a high-impact industry traditionally governed by large amounts of fragmented and unstructured data. By taking the most rigorous and multimodal approach, Spot Ship has developed a unique capability to extract hidden intelligence from these communications with definitive reliability. This is a technical feat that creates a highly defensible competitive advantage, and I am delighted to continue supporting the team as they turn this structural edge into a new global standard.”

This first investment marks a significant milestone for Ventures.eu as it begins deploying capital in the strongest emerging companies across Europe. With a model that combines proprietary sourcing through Dealflow.eu and practical commercial validation, Ventures.eu is setting a new standard for value-added venture investing.

Following its first close in July, Ventures.eu Fund I aims to support technology-driven companies tackling real industrial challenges across Europe. With Spot Ship as its inaugural investment, the fund demonstrates its commitment to combining capital with deep industry expertise and a powerful corporate network to accelerate growth from day one.
