The Council of Ministers has authorized the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration to participate, through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT) , in the Spanish artificial intelligence and quantum computing software company. Multiverse Computing, with a public investment of up to 107 million euros .
Founded in 2019 in San Sebastián, Multiverse ComputingIt stands as the largest quantum software company in Europe . Its activity focuses on the development of energy-efficient AI solutions based on quantum computing-inspired technologies, which improve AI productivity and sustainability in key sectors such as finance, energy, logistics, space, health, and defense .
In June 2025, SETT backed the company with a €59.2 million investment , aiming to boost its unique technological solutions that compress the large language models used by the most popular chatbots . Its technology allows for a significant reduction in the size and energy consumption of AI (up to 95%) , which also facilitates the deployment of these models on small devices such as smartphones, laptops, or satellites.
Thanks to its tensor networks, a quantum-inspired approach to simplifying neural networks, Multiverse enables AI that is 4 to 12 times faster and reduces costs by 50% to 80% . Its technology thus allows for the development of more sustainable and efficient Artificial Intelligence, capabilities that strengthen the strategic sovereignty of Spain and Europe in a key sector such as Artificial Intelligence.
From this first public investment,Multiverse ComputingIt has experienced a period of intense activity and transformation, in addition to closing agreements with key players in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem as part of its strategic alliances . This is the case with Cohere, one of the leading Canadian companies in AI; Axelera AI, a European provider of specialized AI hardware, to bring compressed models to the edge; Plain Concepts, with the aim of strengthening its presence in the Spanish and European markets; Inetum, to drive projects in strategic sectors such as defense and public administration; and the consulting firms EY and PwC, in order to accelerate the adoption of a more efficient and sustainable enterprise AI.
Their technological offering has undergone a qualitative leap with the launch of a new generation of optimized and highly efficient AI models : their first open-source model and the development of a family of compressed models designed to deliver advanced AI capabilities with a fraction of the computational resources required by conventional models. These models enable the execution of complex tasks in hardware-constrained environments , accelerating the adoption of efficient AI in use cases where cost, latency, and energy are critical factors.
The company has also reinforced its strategy of democratizing access to AI , making it easier for developers and end users to download, test, and run optimized models locally on their own devices, without relying on external infrastructure.
SETT is carrying out this operation through its Next Tech facility , using funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan ( Next Generation EU Funds ), which aims to boost financing for startups and scale-ups in the deep tech sector. In addition, SETT manages two other facilities to strengthen the technology business ecosystem: PERTE Chip , dedicated to microelectronics and semiconductors, and Spain Audiovisual Hub , which promotes the digitalization of the audiovisual sector.
