The Council of Ministers has authorized the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration to participate, through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), in the Valencian photonic chip company Atypics Photonics , with a public investment of 24.5 million euros .

This operation is part of a public-private partnership between SETT and the Valencian company Baladre Capital . Together, they will co-invest a total of €50 million in Atypics Photonics (with a 49% and 51% stake, respectively) in the first phase, and an additional investment of €200 million is planned for a second phase .

SETT's investment is part of the PERTE Chip, whose objective is to strengthen national industrial and technological leadership by supporting projects that combine innovation, sustainability and transfer to the market.

Atypics Photonics, a newly established company (April 2026), was born out of the Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (ICTS) MICRONANOFABS-NTC of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) , which has over 15 years of experience in photonic chip manufacturing services . Its research and industrial capabilities in integrated photonics have proven crucial in essential fields such as healthcare, telecommunications, quantum computing, energy, defense, and the aerospace sector .

The company aims to become the leading private "Lab-to-Fab" in photonics . It will provide technological services for research, development, prototyping, integration, and manufacturing of photonic integrated circuits for advanced semiconductor applications. It will be equipped to manufacture 200 and 300 mm wafers , thus positioning itself as a key player in the European semiconductor ecosystem, aligned with the European Chips Act 2.0, the PERTE Chip program, and the support policies for this sector promoted by the Spanish Government and the European Union.

The first phase , already approved, will operate in new facilities that include 1,240 m² of cleanrooms . Beyond this initial phase, the overall project envisions the construction of 7,502 m² of cleanrooms at its permanent facilities, located within the municipality of Paterna .

As a result of this activity, it is expected that, in this first phase, 100 highly qualified direct jobs will be generated directly and more than 300 once the second phase is completed , in addition to the indirect jobs induced by the activity.

Atypics Photonics is, in short, a unique private initiative in Spain that directly contributes to the objective of strategic sovereignty in semiconductors , thanks to its production vocation —beyond R&D— and will be the only one to have capabilities in emerging materials that represent the next technological generation of photonic semiconductors .

The implementation of the PERTE Chip fund , established under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds , is among SETT's responsibilities. In addition, the entity manages two other financial instruments designed to boost the technology business ecosystem: Next Tech , focused on disruptive technologies, and Spain Audiovisual Hub , which promotes the digitalization of the audiovisual sector.
