The Port of Barcelona and BlueTechPort are launching, with the opening of registrations, the Lighthouse International Acceleration Program—a new initiative designed to attract international startups developing innovative solutions in the maritime, port, logistics, and broader blue economy sectors. The call for applications will remain open until June 1, 2026, and is aimed at globally ambitious startups in early or early growth stages that are developing mature technologies.

The program is led by BlueTechPort, supported by the Port of Barcelona, and backed by the technical expertise of Mind the Bridge.

Strengthening a global blue economy hub

Barcelona and its port have progressively positioned themselves as one of Europe’s most dynamic hubs for maritime innovation and the blue economy, thanks to the combination of a major global port, strong public-private collaboration, top-tier research institutions, and a growing startup ecosystem.

According to the Blue Economy Observatory, this sector generated more than €11.19 billion in revenue in Barcelona, representing 5% of the city’s total economic activity. It is a sector encompassing high value-added activities, with productivity levels more than 20% higher than the city average.

Emma Cobos, Director of Innovation and Blue Economy Strategy at the Port of Barcelona, notes that “innovation, digitalization, and sustainability are key pillars of the Port of Barcelona’s strategy,” adding that “this program reinforces our commitment to becoming a smart, decarbonized, and innovation-driven logistics hub by connecting global startups with real operational challenges and opportunities.”

In this context, BlueTechPort—the Port of Barcelona’s blue economy innovation hub, managed by World Trade Center Barcelona—plays a key role in fostering innovation and connecting the different stakeholders within the ecosystem.

A program with real impact on innovation

Starting on July 6, 2026, the Lighthouse International Acceleration Program will combine, over 12 weeks, in-person activities at BlueTechPort with online sessions, offering access to the Port of Barcelona as a real testing environment.

Carles Anglada, CEO of World Trade Center Barcelona, highlights that “BlueTechPort was created to turn Barcelona into the leading blue economy hub in the Mediterranean. With Lighthouse, we open the Port as a real laboratory for global startups ready to shape the future of maritime innovation and sustainable port ecosystems.”

Startups selected for the program will benefit from:

  • Personalized mentoring and expert guidance
  • Access to pilot opportunities and real-world testing
  • Connections with corporations, ports, and investors
  • Participation in the Smart City Expo World Congress – Tomorrow.Blue Economy (November 3–5, 2026)

This year’s edition will select up to 8 startups in key areas such as digital ports and automation; maritime logistics and mobility; maritime infrastructure and resilience; port and maritime sustainability; ocean and environmental monitoring; and marine biotechnology.

Participation is free of charge and does not require equity or relocation, although office space will be offered at the BlueTechPort hub.

Connecting startups, companies, and global markets

As a business hub located in the port area, BlueTechPort will play a prominent role in connecting the international business community with the program.

Mind the Bridge will contribute its expertise in international acceleration and open innovation. “Ports are becoming powerful innovation platforms and hubs attracting startups and international talent,” says Francesca Cavanna, Managing Director Europe at Mind the Bridge. “By connecting startups with the Port of Barcelona and its ecosystem, Lighthouse creates the conditions to develop real pilots, build strong partnerships, and scale internationally—exactly what startups need to grow,” she adds.

Application process

Applications can be submitted from April 23 to June 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. CET). The program will run from July to November 2026 and will culminate within the framework of the Smart City Expo World Congress.
