The Region of Madrid is an emerging Deeptech hub that ranks 1st in Spain and 4th in Europe in number of startups (more than 400), 6th in Europe in jobs generated (over 12,000), and 8th in Europe in total investment since 2000 (more than €1.2 billion), according to the latest Deeptech report by Startup Radar madri+d, based on Dealroom data.
Scientific entrepreneurship is essential to addressing global challenges related to climate, health, energy, advanced materials, and artificial intelligence. Taking into account the long development cycles and the need for validation in line with technological maturity and intellectual property requirements, the Community of Madrid launched DeepTech Madrid in 2024. The initiative offers funding, mentoring, training, and access to the talent required to launch a scientific venture. The program works to bridge the gap between knowledge and the market and is coordinated by the madri+d Foundation for Knowledge, with support from the Regional Ministry of Education, Science and Universities, and co-funding from the Regional Ministry of Digitalization.
In its first two years, Deeptech Madrid has provided financial support of up to €55,000 per project or company, more than 800 hours of tailored mentoring, go-to-market training, investment support through BAN madri+d, access to international contacts via participation in fairs, global events and missions—such as the annual madri+d mission to the Massachusetts ecosystem—and management talent sourcing through the Deeptech Madrid Talent Platform.
As a result, the program has supported the creation of startups born from 43 scientific projects led by researchers or professionals from universities and research institutions, including: QoolNet (quantum cybersecurity), Imhotech (scar treatment), Stone161 (erosion control in degraded areas), Microsei Biotech (microbiota analysis), Onco Care (oncology diagnostics), SureVision Tech (ocular refraction), Crystal Semiconductors (crystal growth, microelectronics, and sensor manufacturing), and Qarina, among others.
In addition, 37 Deeptech startups with a high level of scientific innovation have accessed services such as market validation and testing, legal and intellectual property support, clinical development studies, prototype development, and new product functionalities.
To date, 10 of these startups, already in commercial or advanced pre-commercial stages, have made progress in scaling their operations through international connections, specialized AI advisory services, preparation for international commercialization, and market validation, among other activities. Examples of outcomes include: increased commercial impact through reinforced product marketing efforts or identification of target clients in other countries (Stab Therapeutics); consolidation of their position in Europe and expansion into other markets (Radian Systems); improved demonstration capabilities for potential partners and investors (Lidax); and new commercial campaigns targeting strategic sectors (Q-Dynamics).
The Community of Madrid benefits from a highly active business ecosystem with numerous companies—both corporates and startups—and the largest concentration of venture capital entities in Spain. This enables Deeptech companies to leverage collaborations and strategic partnerships. Major corporations such as Microsoft, Siemens, IBM, Telefónica, Sacyr, Amazon, Indra, SAP, Acciona, and Oracle are among those fostering Deeptech projects and startups across all technological fields.
Moreover, Madrid’s Deeptech ecosystem includes more than 50 research institutions that generate spin-offs from universities, research centers, foundations, and hospitals, along with over 35 specialized incubators that attract highly qualified professionals from diverse disciplines such as engineering, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and robotics.
