The open innovation platform BIND kicks off its 10th edition with the participation of 21 startups from around the world. This year, 23 technological projects will be developed together with 70 leading Basque companies, thanks to the support of the Basque Government and the SPRI Group. This public–private programme was launched in 2016 and, since then, has benefited more than 250 startups and driven over 360 projects.

The selected startups will work with large companies in the Basque Country, such as Repsol-Petronor, Betsaide, Elecnor, Ingeteam, GH Cranes, Maier, Orona, Tubacex, Valoriza, Keralty and Uvesco, among others. The solutions developed will be presented on 2 July at the BIND Demo Day, the sector’s flagship event, which brings together more than 500 attendees each year, including companies, public bodies, investors and key players in innovation and entrepreneurship. A must-attend event to discover the latest trends and technological solutions applied in industry, as well as the startups and companies implementing them.

AI, IoT and Clean Tech: key technologies for Basque industry

Among the technologies featured in the projects to be launched in this 10th edition of BIND, the application of Artificial Intelligence stands out, accounting for 40% of the projects selected by partner companies, followed by Clean Tech technologies at 21%, and IoT at 9% of the solutions chosen by participating Basque companies.

The projects, which will be developed throughout the first half of the year, have the following main objectives:

  • Digitising, automating and increasing the traceability of industrial processes.
  • Improving machinery maintenance.
  • Optimising logistics, the value chain and resource circularity.
  • Boosting digital health.

An internationally recognised initiative

The call to take part in this tenth edition of BIND received more than 882 applications from startups in 74 different countries. These applications proposed solutions for the 12 use cases put forward by BIND partner companies, covering the areas of processes and operations, sustainability, customer and business, and health.

Since its first edition in 2016, the platform has grown to become a benchmark model for open innovation at an international level. This year, in terms of origin, 7 of the 21 selected startups are international, from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico. Among the national startups, 10 are based in the Basque Country: 7 from Gipuzkoa and 3 from Bizkaia. The remaining 4 come from Barcelona, Pontevedra, Santander and Seville.

The startups participating in this 10th edition will have access to a free acceleration programme, which includes mentoring, networking sessions within the Basque innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, and connections with investors.
