The investment firm Stoneweg has completed the purchase of the historic Comèdia cinema building, located at the junction of Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via in Barcelona, from Pla and Planàs families, the previous owners of the property. The project will see more than €100 million invested, split between the acquisition price and the renovation programme costs.

The building, which currently has a surface area of 6,700 sqm, will be the future home of the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Barcelona. This new cultural space, promoted by Baroness Carmen Cervera and Stoneweg Places & Experiences, will include a selection of the Baroness’s collection of 19th- and 20th-century Catalan art. Considered one of the most important collections of Catalan art from this period, it will form part of the museum’s permanent exhibition.

The museum will also host exhibitions by renowned contemporary artists, showcasing the link between artistic tradition and current trends. This dual approach will allow the public to enjoy an experience that combines Catalonia’s historical heritage with new, innovative, avant-garde concepts.

The building acquired by Stoneweg is part of the historic Palau Marcet, which was declared a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL) in May 2000 by the municipal council. It is also included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, which recognises it as one of the few preserved urban palaces in Barcelona’s Eixample district.

A state-of-the-art architectural renovation

Stoneweg Places & Experiences plans to carry out a comprehensive renovation of the building, respecting its heritage value and providing it with architectural elements that will transform it into a new urban icon. The renovation work will be carried out by Casper Mueller Kneer Architects (Germany) and OUA (Spain), making this one of the most signficant real estate and cultural projects in Barcelona this year.

The initiative reenforces Stoneweg’s position as a leading developer of distinctive properties and experiences in Southern Europe and its commitment to transforming iconic urban spaces into settings that blend history, heritage and modernity.

From former palace and iconic cinema to the new Carmen Thyssen Museum

The new museum aims to honour the history of the building, which for decades housed one of the city’s most iconic cinemas, while transforming it to meet the demands of a world-class museum centre. This new space will also help cement the legacy of Carmen Cervera: a distinguished collector, an internationally-renowned Barcelona native and a key figure on the European cultural scene for more than four decades.

This project also reinforces the commitment of Stoneweg Places & Experiences to finding new uses for the city’s historic buildings, an initiative that includes proposals for a future exhibition centre in the Godó i Trias factory in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, and the renovation in 2024 of the Imax building to house the America’s Cup Experience, an information centre for the America’s Cup.

Since 2022, the platform has also promoted Barcelona’s Palau Martorell exhibition hall, hosting exhibitions by famous painters such as Fernando Botero, currently on display, Alphonse Mucha, Chagall and Sorolla, among others.

The transaction was supported by Graells March Abogados (legal), the property consultancy Savills España and Banca March.
