Sodena has recently completed a successful exit from its stake in Abanza Tecnomed, a Navarre-based company specialized in innovative solutions for trauma surgery. This transaction marks the conclusion of a partnership that began in 2017, reflecting Sodena’s strategy of public-private support in early-stage ventures.
The relationship between Sodena and Abanza started in 2017 with the granting of a €100,000 participative loan aimed at developing advanced technology for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. In 2022, the public investment company led, together with Clave Capital, a €1.2 million financing round, contributing €350,000 and partially capitalizing the previous loan.
Over the past five years, this innovative company from Navarre has doubled its workforce. Its current team consists of 13 professionals, 9 of whom are women.
Throughout its business journey, Abanza successfully completed the development of its WasherCap® device—a patented technology that obtained CE marking in 2020 and FDA 510(k) clearance in 2022. The first surgeries using the device in ACL knee reconstruction were performed in Spain in 2020. The technology is now being adapted for additional applications such as ankle and shoulder procedures. The company later shifted its main commercial focus to the U.S., where it is executing an ambitious growth plan and has already signed agreements with major national hospital groups. In 2019, Abanza was awarded the prestigious Everis Innovation Award for this very device, and in 2022, it was the only Spanish company invited to present at the Musculoskeletal New Ventures Conference.
The project is now entering a phase of business consolidation and international expansion, with a presence in both Europe and the United States, and plans to grow its team to 30 employees by 2026.
