The Spanish government continues its commitment to quantum computing by supporting the Barcelona-based Spanish company Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech (QQT) . The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration , through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), is promoting the development of its technological innovations with an investment of one million euros and reaffirming its commitment to continued investment in quantum computing, a key area for the strategic sovereignty of Spain and Europe.
QQT is leading this technological revolution with an approach that fosters innovation, collaboration, and accessibility, promising to significantly transform the sector. In its first round of funding, in which SETT participated with one million euros under its public-private partnership model , the company has been able to advance in the development of quantum hardware and prototypes.
This investment strengthens Qilimanjaro's position as a European leader in quantum computing, as it is the first Spanish company to offer full-stack quantum computing , with a competitive advantage in analog systems based on superconducting flux qubits and a co-design strategy for specific applications. This system maximizes the time it takes advantage of quantum effects and allows its technology to be both scalable and efficient . Its solutions are applied in key sectors such as energy, telecommunications, cybersecurity, logistics, retail, and research centers.
The company was founded in 2019 as a spin-off from three public academic institutions: the Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE), the University of Barcelona (UB), and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) , where QQT installed the first quantum computer in Spain. This initial co-investment phase is expected to create over 100 direct jobs, most of them highly skilled, as well as more than 300 indirect jobs.
“We are seeing Qilimanjaro grow both in its innovation and its projection as a company. SETT has boosted QQT thanks to its co-investment model, but will continue to support the company in its promising future as a technological benchmark ,” highlighted Javier Ponce, CEO of the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation .
Qilimanjaro's new data center
Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech inaugurated its Quantum Data Center on November 6th , the first multimodal quantum infrastructure in Europe, which will house up to 10 quantum computers.
Analog quantum computing is particularly well-suited for continuous and complex problems, such as simulating molecules, materials, and physical systems. It also offers new ways to train artificial intelligence models and solve large-scale optimization challenges , paving the way for faster and more energy-efficient computing .
Through its SpeQtrum platform, conceived as Quantum-as-a-Service (QaaS), Qilimanjaro will offer cloud access to quantum computing for companies, research centers and universities across Europe.
SETT participated in this inauguration event, which was attended by the Business Development Director, José María García Orois , who highlighted that “SETT maintains its firm commitment to accompany the company in the next stages of growth , which already place it as one of the main European benchmarks in quantum technologies.”
For her part, Marta Estarellas, CEO of Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, emphasized that “this center is much more than a technology facility; it is an open ecosystem where industry, research, and public institutions can prepare for the future. Quantum computing is not a distant promise, but a reality that is already transforming the way we understand innovation.”
SETT's investment in QQT falls under the PERTE Chip program , which aims to strengthen the design and production capabilities of the microelectronics and semiconductor industry in Spain. The implementation of the PERTE Chip fund , established by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed by the European Union through Next Generation EU funds, is among SETT's responsibilities. SETT also manages two other financial instruments to boost the technology business ecosystem: Next Tech , dedicated to disruptive technologies, and Spain Audiovisual Hub , which promotes the digitalization of the audiovisual sector.
