The United States and Mexican Patent Offices have granted RI MEDICAL U.S. and Mexican patents for its prostate cancer screening device. These patents will remain in force until at least 2042, allowing RI MEDICAL to exclusively commercialize the technology until that date. The granted claims cover both the design of the device and the method used for prostate cancer screening.
The technology-based company, which was founded in 2023 by REDIT Ventures, the Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV), the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Fe (IIS La Fe), the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), has therefore taken another step forward in its roadmap to become an essential tool for improving the effectiveness and accuracy of prostate cancer detection.
The medical device, which combines a medical ultrasound scanner with a stiffness sensor, enables early detection of prostate cancer (PCa), one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men worldwide, during the screening stage by providing objective, reproducible, and accurate information on prostate stiffness. This solution offers greater objectivity and efficiency in prostate cancer detection, helping avoid the current situation in which 18% of prostate cancers remain undetected in patients with normal PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels, leading to delayed diagnosis and consequently higher morbidity and mortality rates.
The granting of these patents represents a major milestone for RI MEDICAL, as it secures market exclusivity for its medical device and strengthens the company’s position in the field of early detection of one of the world’s most prevalent cancers. The company is currently pursuing patent protection in other key international markets.
