The Catalan company Resol, dedicated to the design and production of outdoor furniture, has developed a technology based on the use of artificial intelligence that enables quality control in the manufacturing process of plastic chairs. Specifically, the company has developed a system that uses artificial vision —with algorithms trained with artificial intelligence using real data— to carry out evaluations of the manufactured furniture and monitor the production process.

The project, carried out within the framework of the Digital Innovation Hub of Catalonia (DIH4CAT) led by ACCIÓ (Department of Business and Labour), has received a grant of €60,000. The initiative has been implemented in collaboration with the technology centre Eurecat, which supported the design of the system and validated the project’s effectiveness as a scalable industrial quality control solution through a use case.

The system developed by Resol is capable of detecting defects in the dimensions, weight and surface appearance of the chairs, such as variations in the colour of the material, imperfections or defects derived from the plastic injection process. Through 2D and 3D cameras with a proprietary control system, among other elements, this technology enables the visualisation of results and the analysis of the data obtained. As a result, the use of this innovative system helps reduce material consumption and contributes to improvements in productivity and operational efficiency. In this way, with this technology the company will significantly reduce production rejects.

The company has begun validating this technology in the manufacturing of the line of chairs it markets for bar terraces and other businesses that use outdoor furniture.

According to Resol’s Industrial and Innovation Director, Miguel Pérez Planas, “this project, promoted by ACCIÓ and DIH4CAT together with Eurecat, has allowed us to accelerate innovation in order to develop increasingly sustainable products while also improving our production processes.” In this sense, “the incorporation of artificial vision is proving key to approaching Resol’s industrialisation in a much more efficient and effective way, as our ultimate goal is to apply this technology to the company’s main production lines,” he highlights.

Resol is a company dedicated to the design and manufacturing of plastic furniture, founded in 1961. It is headquartered in Les Preses (La Garrotxa) and currently employs 230 people. With a turnover of €40 million in 2024, it has two international subsidiaries located in the United States and Mexico, and exports its products to more than 100 countries. The company is part of the Brand Corner business holding, which also includes other Catalan companies from sectors such as lighting, cardboard and packaging, and construction
