Pack2Earth, a startup dedicated to developing robust, bio-based and room-temperature compostable materials, has closed a €1.6 million funding round led by the Spanish venture capital fund Swanlaab Venture Factory.

The round also included participation from the German family office JRV Holding — which is strengthening its commitment after backing the company in its initial round — Creand Crèdit Andorrà, through its investment vehicle Scale Lab Andorra, the Spanish fund Tech Transfer Agrifood managed by Clave Capital, and several private investors.

According to the company, the new capital will help strengthen its commercial activity in strategic markets, set up its own laboratory supported by a new AI-assisted material formulation project, continue progressing in R&D and protecting the company’s intellectual property, and expand its team.

Pack2Earth states that it is already working with clients in Spain and Germany, and has proof-of-concept tests and joint development agreements underway in the UK, the US and Switzerland. Its materials, made from plant- and mineral-based raw materials, offer high gas barriers and, at the end of their life cycle, can be composted at room temperature, generating compost free of toxins and microplastics. Once used, both materials can be disposed of in the brown organic waste bin or in a home composter; in the case of laminated film attached to cardboard, it goes into the blue recycling bin.

In addition, the company highlights that its flexible film and injection material can be used for packaging, to provide barriers for cardboard, and to manufacture industrial, agricultural and even reusable products. They are suitable for contact with dry, semi-liquid and liquid products over long periods, and can be produced using the same conventional machinery and moulds currently used for traditional plastics, facilitating their adoption by the industry.

Pack2Earth’s solution is especially relevant in a context where 91% of plastics are not recycled, 79% end up in landfills or the natural environment, and more than 25% of plastic waste is rejected in recycling processes due to contamination with food residues.
