Catalan company Novicuir laid the foundation stone on Tuesday for a new industrial facility dedicated to the leather sector. The company will invest €18 million in the project, which is located in Santa Margarida de Montbui (Anoia), and will create around 20 new jobs. The ceremony was attended by the Minister for Business and Labour, Miquel Sàmper; the Mayor of Santa Margarida de Montbui, Jesús Miguel Juárez; and the Mayor of Igualada and President of the Conca d'Òdena Commonwealth of Municipalities, Marc Castells.
Novicuir's project has received support from ACCIÓ, the Catalan Government's agency for business competitiveness under the Department of Business and Labour, through a €300,000 grant from its High Business Impact Aid programme.
The new industrial facility, covering approximately 12,000 square metres and located in the Plans de la Tossa industrial estate, will specialise in the preparation and stabilisation of hides, from their collection at slaughterhouses, mainly in Catalonia, to preparing them for the subsequent stages of the tanning process.
According to the Minister for Business and Labour, Miquel Sàmper, "this investment will strengthen the Conca d'Òdena's position as a strategic hub for the leather sector and is a clear example of the circular economy, while also creating high-quality employment." He also highlighted the collaboration between public authorities and the private sector "aimed at generating opportunities across Catalonia."
The new facility has been designed to improve quality control, increase the sustainability of production processes and ensure full traceability of the hides.
The Novicuir project is being promoted by Pieles y Cueros Palomeras y Gambús, based in Riudellots de la Selva; Rémy Carriat, from the French Basque Country; and Curtidos Badia, based in Igualada, with the strategic backing of a major client shared by the three companies.
This investment represents a strategic commitment to the tanning industry and to the Conca d'Òdena leather cluster, strengthening the competitiveness of the companies and services linked to this sector.
