MONDRAGON and Arteche have launched AMETS Power Electronics, a new company focused on the development of innovative solutions in power electronics. This strategic alliance brings together Arteche’s international experience, MONDRAGON’s cooperative and industrial ecosystem, and Ikerlan’s technological capabilities to address both current and future challenges in the management and transformation of electrical energy.

AMETS is born as a joint venture (50% Arteche – 50% MONDRAGON Inversiones and Ikerlan) and aspires to become a benchmark in the development of more efficient, flexible, and sustainable electrical systems. The company plans to start its industrial activity with the technological development of power electronics-based solutions for applications in power grids, renewable energy, and heavy industry.

Building the foundations of a new business

Alex Artetxe, CEO and Chairman of Arteche, explained the scope of industrial activities within power electronics:

“It refers to the generation and delivery of electrical power to the user. Power electronics technology improves distribution, minimizes losses by increasing efficiency, and creates a safe and stable system.” Pello Rodríguez, President of MONDRAGON, added:

“Both MONDRAGON and Arteche have sufficient industrial, financial, and technological resources to embark on this journey. It is also a project aimed at a global, future-oriented market that impacts everyday life and will be developed with high-quality employment: we are talking about a joint investment of €5 million and a team of 50 qualified professionals in this initial phase.”

A shared and complementary vision

AMETS Power Electronics is built on a collaborative model that places market, technology, and industrial manufacturing as the three pillars of a strategic triangle designed to maximize innovation and impact along the energy value chain.

“This is a partnership built on shared values: commitment to industry, a long-term vision, and a strong focus on people,” said Alex Artetxe during the launch event in Bilbao.

“AMETS is an opportunity to explore new technological frontiers and to pave the way toward a future in which we remain at the forefront of the energy sector, offering solutions to meet society’s challenges.”

From MONDRAGON’s side, Pello Rodríguez emphasized: “We are launching this new project with great enthusiasm, as it represents a collaboration between companies with extensive industrial experience to create a new business in a forward-looking sector.”

The new company has been established as a limited liability company, with a balanced governance structure consisting of four board members—two from Arteche and two from MONDRAGON Inversiones and Ikerlan. AMETS will align with principles of positive local impact, generating synergies with group companies and contributing to regional technological and economic development.

Technological innovation in service of the energy future

The creation of AMETS reflects a long-term vision aligned with the strategic roadmaps of both organizations. It will begin with a first phase of design and development of power electronics solutions, carried out in close collaboration between the technical teams at Ikerlan and Arteche. The focus will be on technological excellence and sustainability, leading the way toward future manufacturing and commercialization.

MONDRAGON’s roadmap

In its 2025–2028 strategic plan, MONDRAGON aims to “achieve leadership positions by improving competitiveness, collaboration, and adaptability to become a key agent of social transformation.” For this next four-year cycle, MONDRAGON has identified four strategic pillars: identity, future-oriented business, openness and social impact, and inter-cooperation.

The creation of AMETS Power Electronics responds directly to two of those strategic priorities:

  • Promoting new activities and businesses in future-focused sectors, and
  • Fostering collaborations with third parties to activate new proposals that generate economic activity and sustainable employment.

MONDRAGON will bring to this project its full range of capabilities—technological (primarily through Ikerlan), industrial, and knowledge-based—to ensure the joint initiative’s success and open the door to future partnerships. It also reinforces MONDRAGON’s positioning as a relevant player in a future-defining sector: energy.
