InnoUp Farma, a biotechnology company backed by Sodena, has successfully completed the Phase 1 clinical trial of INP20, its oral immunotherapy candidate for the treatment of peanut allergy, one of the most common and potentially severe food allergies worldwide.
The preliminary results demonstrate promising signs of immunological activity and support the advancement of the programme into Phase 2, which is ready to begin.
The Phase 1 trial enrolled 52 patients aged between 12 and 65 years, who received a once-daily dose of the treatment over a 14-day period. Among the key findings was a significant increase in immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4), a biomarker associated with immune tolerance. Participants recorded an 8.9-fold increase over baseline levels, with the response continuing to rise even two weeks after the final dose.
A Novel Approach to Food Allergy Treatment
Unlike other therapies currently available or under development, INP20 is not designed to desensitise patients to the allergen. Instead, it aims to replicate the biological signals generated by the gut microbiota that naturally promote tolerance to food.
This innovative approach seeks to address the underlying mechanisms responsible for immune tolerance, targeting the root cause of food allergies rather than simply reducing symptoms or allergic reactions.
The company believes this strategy could represent a paradigm shift in the treatment of food allergies by offering a solution capable of modulating the immune response in a deeper and potentially more durable way.
Next Step: Phase 2
Following the successful completion of Phase 1, InnoUp Farma is preparing to initiate the next stage of clinical development for INP20. The full study results are currently undergoing peer review for potential publication in the scientific journal Nature Medicine.
In the meantime, the company has made a preprint version of the study available to the scientific community through open access.
Driving Biotech Innovation in Navarra
The progress achieved by INP20 further strengthens InnoUp Farma’s position as one of the most innovative biotechnology companies within Navarra’s life sciences ecosystem. The company is supported by Sodena, the Government of Navarra’s public development agency dedicated to fostering and financing high-growth business projects.
The successful completion of this first clinical phase marks a significant milestone both for the company and for the development of new therapies aimed at improving the lives of people affected by food allergies, a health condition whose prevalence continues to rise worldwide.
