Highlight Therapeutics, a biotech company in the portfolio of Columbus Venture Partners, takes a decisive new step in its clinical development strategy with the launch of its seventh trial in advanced basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer worldwide. This study marks a milestone in the public-private partnership between the biotech company and the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), which will run through 2027.
The trial evaluates the efficacy of BO-112, an innovative immunotherapy based on double-stranded RNA that acts as a powerful alarm signal for the immune system, triggering a targeted response against tumor cells. BO-112 has shown in previous studies its ability to transform the tumor microenvironment and induce meaningful clinical responses, especially when combined with other therapies.
The first therapy for the most common type of skin cancer ‘made in Spain’
“This is the first immunotherapy targeting the most common type of skin cancer to have been developed from Spanish science and innovation — something that fills us with pride and responsibility,” says Marisol Quintero, CEO of Highlight Therapeutics, the company developing the therapy. “This trial is a key step toward demonstrating that BO-112 could become a real therapeutic option for patients who currently have very few alternatives.”
For its part, the CNIO will contribute its scientific expertise by analyzing patient biopsies and integrating experimental models in order to gain a deeper understanding of the drug’s mechanism of action and to define predictive biomarkers of response.
The Columbus Venture Partners team, strategic investor in the development of BO-112, celebrates this new clinical milestone as a validation of the company’s scientific and business strategy, while also highlighting it as “a clear example of the kind of biotechnology the life sciences investment fund supports.” In the words of Damià Tormo, founding partner of Columbus Venture Partners, “this is one of the most promising immunotherapies being developed in Europe, with real potential to change the treatment landscape for certain types of cancer.”
This new trial positions Highlight Therapeutics at the international forefront of intratumoral immunotherapy and reinforces Columbus's commitment to driving transformative oncology projects.
