Cuatrecasas has advised Naturmet Plus, a company backed by FIEE SGR, ABE Capital Partners and Grupo Oleofat, specialising in the recovery and valorisation of agricultural, livestock and agro-industrial waste and by-products, on the structuring of approximately €60 million in project financing for the construction of three biomethane production plants in Andalusia and Extremadura.

The transaction, financed by BBVA, Banco Santander and Abanca, and with Finergreen acting as financial adviser, is one of the first project finance transactions in Spain for the construction of a portfolio of biomethane production plants. Biomethane is a renewable gas obtained by purifying biogas generated from the decomposition of non-hazardous organic waste and, compared to fossil-based natural gas, drastically reduces CO2 emissions.

Innovation, quality and sustainability

Since its creation in 2021, Naturmet has sought to bring a circular economy model to rural areas, focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and connecting it with industrial needs through the use of carbon-neutral — or even carbon-negative — fuels. Its growth strategy is strongly based on innovation and development, particularly through investment in new biomethane-related technologies.

The Cuatrecasas team advising on the transaction included lawyers Tomás Ugalde, Irene Sanz and Julio Aznar from Finance; Alejandro Bonitch, Ignacio Giner and Irene Ortega from Public Law; Javier Calle from Tax; and Sora Park from Corporate M&A
