Avant Devices has launched an investment round on Startupxplore, Spain's leading startup co-investment platform, with the goal of raising between €60,000 and €260,000 to complete the medical device certification process, strengthen its intellectual property portfolio, and prepare the first commercial production runs of Explorer One, its electric conversion kit for manual wheelchairs.
The round has already secured €45,000 in committed investments and is backed by several business angels, as well as startup accelerators including EOI and UCAM HiTech.
From Personal Experience to Product Innovation
The company was founded by Juan Antonio Carrasco, whose personal experience shaped the project's vision. Living with a rare disease since birth and later sustaining a spinal cord injury, Carrasco experienced firsthand the limitations of existing mobility solutions.
After years of testing different assistive technologies, he identified a common shortcoming: most products were designed to adapt users to the device, rather than adapting the device to the real-world environments where users live, work and travel.
That experience has guided the development of Explorer One from day one. The system features a modular architecture, optimized weight, tool-free installation and removal by the user, interchangeable batteries and terrain-specific wheels—all designed around everyday mobility needs rather than purely engineering considerations.
Turning Any Manual Wheelchair into an All-Terrain Electric Mobility Device
Most powered wheelchairs currently available are designed primarily for smooth urban environments, making them unsuitable for common settings such as rural paths, beaches or uneven terrain.
In addition, many existing solutions are closed systems intended for a single use case, forcing users either to own multiple mobility devices—at considerable expense—or to give up certain activities altogether.
Explorer One addresses this challenge through an electric conversion kit that integrates directly with an existing manual wheelchair, allowing quick installation and intuitive operation.
Its interchangeable rear-wheel system enables users to adapt the wheelchair for different environments—including urban areas, countryside trails and sandy beaches—while a modular battery system extends operating range during longer journeys.
The company has already developed a functional MVP that has been successfully tested in urban, rural and beach environments. It is currently working toward obtaining CE certification as a Class I medical device, while simultaneously industrializing the product and preparing its first commercial production runs.
A Market Driven by Ageing Populations and the Demand for Greater Independence
Avant Devices operates within the global assisted mobility and powered wheelchair market—a multi-billion-euro industry benefiting from demographic trends, including population ageing and growing demand for independent living.
According to industry research, the powered wheelchair segment is expected to grow at an annual rate exceeding 12% over the coming years.
With an estimated starting price of €4,500 for the base model and approximately €5,900 for the advanced version, Explorer One is positioned significantly below competing all-terrain electric mobility solutions, many of which retail for between €15,000 and €25,000.
The company's business model combines direct sales with a B2B2C strategy through orthopedic clinics, specialized distributors, patient associations, hospitals, insurance providers and rehabilitation centers. It also expects to generate recurring revenue through replacement batteries, wheels, spare parts, maintenance services and future digital offerings.
Building a Connected Mobility Platform
Avant Devices' long-term vision extends well beyond Explorer One.
The company aims to evolve into a comprehensive connected mobility platform, integrating smart sensors, safety systems, remote connectivity, monitoring applications, predictive maintenance capabilities and membership-based mobility services for both users and distribution partners.
While the initial commercial focus is on Spain, Portugal and Western Europe, Avant Devices has a broader international strategy targeting North America, Canada and Latin America, where accessibility challenges create significant demand for more versatile and affordable mobility solutions.
The company has already begun collaborating with organizations including D'Genes and ALIBER to validate the product alongside communities with real-world mobility needs.
