Clave Capital, a leading venture capital firm in technology transfer in Spain with more than 20 years of experience in the sector, has exited Abanzamed, a company that develops medical devices for soft tissue fixation in arthroscopic surgery. The sale of its stake has enabled it to achieve an equity multiple of 4.25x for its fund UN I+D+i Technology Transfer F.C.R., launched in 2016 by Clave together with the University of Navarra to support technology transfer projects, being the first tech transfer fund linked to a university in Spain.
Since its incorporation, Abanzamed has developed a pipeline of various fixation systems for surgeries, initially focused on the knee and now diversifying into ankle and shoulder, based on a patented technology called WasherCap. The company initially obtained the CE mark in 2020 and subsequently the FDA 510(k) clearance in 2022 for its first knee fixation system, performing the first surgeries in Spain in 2020. It later shifted its main commercial focus to the U.S., where it has an ambitious growth plan, with agreements already signed with major nationwide hospital groups.
From Clave, we extend our warmest congratulations to the entire team, led by Juan Abascal, for their achievements. In particular, Santiago Lozano, Partner and Director of the UN I+D+i Technology Transfer F.C.R. fund and Board Member at Abanza during these years, recognizes the outstanding capabilities of the entire team, their commitment, dedication, and deep market knowledge in always seeking solutions best suited to the needs of clinical practice in this type of surgery.
With this divestment completed in July 2025, Clave continues its strategic commitment to technology transfer and to generating value from the initial phase through to exit. Clave has invested more than €40 million over the past 10 years in Deep Tech, having launched various funds with a total size exceeding €100 million in tech transfer, both with universities (UPV, UNAV), with corporations (Corporación Mondragón), and through sector-focused funds in areas such as health and foodtech, in both cases involving key industrial partners and thus leading funds together with the different partners that make up the tech transfer ecosystem.
