Bright Pixel, the venture capital arm of the Sonae Group, has co-led Duel’s $16 million Series A funding round. Duel is a platform that helps leading retail brands such as Lush, ELEMIS, Victoria’s Secret, and Abercrombie & Fitch grow through their own communities of fans and digital content creators, replacing traditional advertising. The investment was co-led with Molten Ventures and includes participation from Peter Bauer, founder of Mimecast and an existing investor in the company.
Duel positions itself as an innovative tool for marketing teams. Just as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) revolutionized client management, Duel now proposes Advocate Relationship Management (ARM): a unique system for managing all brand ambassadors, from customers to employees and professional influencers.
The platform allows brands to recruit, activate, and expand their own networks of ambassadors who create and share authentic content about products on their social channels, influencing the purchasing behavior of their followers. With this technology, brands can manage communities of tens of thousands of members (advocates) using the same resources they currently dedicate to a small group of professional influencers.
Duel helps brands assign personalized challenges at scale, such as recommending products or posting “fit checks,” and reward participation with discounts, points, or exclusive benefits. Integrated into the brands’ e-commerce systems, Duel’s solution also allows companies to measure, in real time, the impact of these actions on sales and brand visibility (brand awareness and engagement). The goal is clear: structure and scale traditional word-of-mouth marketing, transforming it into a strategic channel for sustainable growth.
The capital raised will be used to drive Duel’s growth in the United States, following its recent expansion to New York, and to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities to identify and activate brand fans with hyper-personalized experiences.
“What we are seeing today is clear: the old short-term, transactional campaign model is losing effectiveness. Brands showing stronger growth are those building robust communities capable of sustaining long-term value. Duel is leading this change, turning brand advocacy into a systematic and scalable strategy,” says Miguel Bagulho, Investment Director at Bright Pixel. “We believe brand advocacy will become one of the main growth drivers of the next decade, not only in retail but across all sectors, and at Bright Pixel we are proud to support Paul and the Duel team in leading this transformation.”
“In today’s hyper-connected world, where social networks now exceed all other communication channels combined and are fully user-managed, the most successful brands are those that invest in people and communities, not in advertising,” explains Paul Archer, CEO and co-founder of Duel. “The reality is that the best brand ambassadors are not those with a signed contract, but the customers who share and recommend products they love. Our data shows that between one-fifth and one-third of a brand’s customers are already active content creators. At Duel, we help brands recruit, activate, and scale these voices, turning regular customers into brand advocates who drive measurable growth.”
Duel’s long-term vision extends beyond retail, aiming to make brand advocacy the standard philosophy for building companies across sectors, from B2B to music, hospitality, services, and entertainment.
Nicola McClafferty, Partner at Molten Ventures, adds: “Duel is rewriting the growth playbook for modern brands. Performance marketing (Google and Meta Ads) has become expensive, impersonal, and often ineffective. Duel offers an alternative that aligns better with how consumers discover and engage with brands, potentially transforming how brands are built and promoted. We are excited to support Duel as they create a new category and redefine modern brand growth.”
With this Series A round, Duel has now raised over $21 million in funding to date.
