Azora continues to strengthen its commitment to the energy transition with an investment of more than €38 million in a new biomethane plant in Zuera (Zaragoza), a project that has been declared of regional interest by the Government of Aragon, allowing for a significant acceleration in its development.
The initiative will be carried out by Enerth Zuera, a company promoted by the joint venture Enerth Investments — wholly owned by Azora Capital — together with the Sociedad Cooperativa Comarcal Ganadera Virgen del Rosario. The project reflects the growing importance of sustainable infrastructure and livestock waste valorization within Spain’s ongoing energy transformation process.
The company will invest a total of €38,213,945 in the construction and operation of the plant, which will be located on plots 179 and 216 of industrial area 10 in Zuera, covering a total surface area of 100,426 and 92,843 square meters, respectively.
The plant is expected to begin operations in the second four-month period of 2028 and will specialize in the production of renewable gas from organic waste, mainly sourced from the local livestock and agricultural sectors, as well as other biodegradable organic materials from alternative industries, using anaerobic digestion technology.
The project is expected to generate a significant economic, social, and environmental impact in the region. During the construction phase, around 50 jobs are expected to be created in engineering, civil works, equipment installation, and project management activities. Once operational, the plant will generate 14 direct jobs.
In addition, the project is expected to create 100 indirect jobs related to auxiliary services, transportation, material supply, and subcontracting, as well as another 30 indirect jobs linked to logistics, raw material transportation, and complementary service management.
The facility will have the capacity to receive, process, and recover up to 280,000 tons of biodegradable organic material annually. From this waste, the plant is expected to generate approximately 13.9 million Nm3 of biomethane per year, equivalent to 154 GWh of annual energy production and the yearly energy consumption of around 17,540 households.
The process will also generate approximately 105,000 tons per year of solid digestate fraction to be used in agriculture as organic soil amendment, as well as around 147,000 tons annually of liquid digestate fraction for fertigation purposes.
The biomethane produced at the facility will be injected into Spain’s national gas transportation network through the construction of a 4,466-meter connection pipeline linking the plant to the existing Enagás gas pipeline. The project also includes the construction of a new metering and regulation station.
In addition to the Zuera plant, Enerth Investment is continuing to advance four other biomethanization projects in Aragon. Among them are the developments planned in Azaila (Teruel) and Magallón (Zaragoza), both of which have already been declared projects of regional interest.
