AstraZeneca Spain, in collaboration with Wayra, Telefónica’s corporate venture capital arm, and Kunsen, an investor specializing in digital health and startup acceleration, has recently held the Pitch Day for startups and healthcare professionals of ACCIÓN, the accelerator created to drive transformative solutions that will shape the future of the healthcare system in the coming years.

The session made it possible to align real needs from the healthcare environment with technological solutions that have practical applications, connecting clinical knowledge with entrepreneurial talent.

The eight winning startups addressed four major challenges. For the healthcare system challenge, the winning proposals focused on triage, clinical data, training, and efficiency in real-world practice:

  • Synthetrial: generation of synthetic data using AI to optimize clinical trials and patient datasets.
  • MiMIAT Health: patient-centered data infrastructure for chronic patients, featuring a digital health passport and real-time shared real-world data (RWD).

For the respiratory challenge, solutions focused on proactive monitoring and digital biomarkers:

  • Chronity: an app that combines symptom tracking, a social network, and research for chronic diseases.
  • Medsys AI: proactive surveillance through triangulation of digital biomarkers, environmental information, and patient data.

For the Oncology challenge, proposals addressed early detection, monitoring, and real-world evidence generation:

  • Amadix (Advanced Marker Discovery): DiagnoLung integrates blood biomarkers, imaging, and risk factors using AI to assess malignancy in lung nodules.
  • Sycai Medical: AI in medical imaging to detect and monitor liver lesions at an early stage and integrate into hospital systems.

Finally, for the cardio-renal challenge, solutions focused on early risk identification, treatment personalization, and structured follow-up:

  • DIABYUDA: personalizes treatment by integrating clinical guidelines to optimize therapeutic decisions and improve health outcomes.
  • CORSONIC: Acoustic Index™ powered by AI to analyze echocardiograms in real time and support more accurate diagnoses.

The eight winning startups will receive top-level mentoring; individualized and personalized support; visibility and positioning at technology, healthcare, and entrepreneurship events; and access to a unique network of investors and entrepreneurs to foster high-quality networking.

In the healthcare professionals category, projects in the respiratory and immunological challenge focused on anticipating complications and improving follow-up in respiratory and immunological conditions:

  • Dr. Miguel Jiménez Gómez, representing Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, with EPORisk, an AI platform to stratify hidden cardiovascular risk in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) using available chest CT scans.
  • Dr. María Asunción Nieto, representing Hospital Clínico San Carlos, with GEMELAsma, digital twins to predict exacerbations in severe asthma and support personalized clinical decision-making.

The Oncology challenge addressed solutions aimed at anticipation, prediction, and improvement of clinical decisions:

  • Dr. Amparo Santamaría Ortiz, representing Hospital Universitario Vinalopó, with GammaPredictIA, an AI solution to stratify the risk of progression of monoclonal gammopathies using longitudinal laboratory data.

Finally, the cardio-renal challenge focused on early diagnosis and comprehensive monitoring of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic conditions:

  • Dr. José Escribano Serrano, representing the Campo de Gibraltar East Health Management Area, with PIERCIA, an intelligent clinical management system to transform the approach to chronic kidney disease toward a proactive and automated model.

These healthcare professionals will receive a €10,000 cash prize, in addition to strategic and technological support and institutional visibility through AstraZeneca Spain’s innovation ecosystem and communication channels, as well as those of its partners.

In addition, one of the winning startup projects will have the opportunity to carry out a pilot program in a hospital, working with healthcare experts to bring the solution into real-world practice.

Andrés Saborido, CEO of Wayra, stated:
“From Wayra, we bring a strong focus on applied innovation: we identify technology with potential, support its growth, and connect it with corporations, investors, and partners capable of accelerating its validation. ACCIÓN’s Pitch Day makes it possible to turn innovation into real collaboration.”
