The sustainable investment platform Goparity is joining efforts to protect the oceans through a collaborative financing campaign that seeks a new ally in the fight against illegal fishing and polluting discharges: space. The LUSÍADA project is developing a constellation of 12 satellites that will enable the monitoring of international waters, the identification of unusual behaviour, and the provision of secure communications between vessels and authorities. The system will also help optimise routes, report polluting spills, and reduce fuel consumption.

These satellites operate using advanced systems such as AIS (Automatic Identification System) and VDES (VHF Data Exchange System), and the first satellite, PoSat-2, is already operational. In collaboration with AAC Clyde Space, the satellites will be launched into space aboard SpaceX vehicles, the US aerospace company. The initiative belongs to LusoSpace, a company with 23 years of experience, and will strengthen the role of the Iberian Peninsula in the space sector.

The crowdlending campaign aims to raise €500,000 and allows anyone to invest from €10 through the Goparity platform, democratising access to space technology and offering the opportunity to take part in a project that contributes to sustainability and the blue economy.

“We want to be a bridge between citizens and cutting-edge innovation with a positive impact,” says Nuno Brito Jorge, CEO of Goparity. “It is inspiring to see Iberian technology leading global environmental solutions and to know that civil society can invest in this progress,” he adds.

“With the support of the Goparity community, we are able to invite anyone to invest in this mission and accelerate the construction of a constellation that will enhance maritime security and sustainability at an international level,” says Ivo Vieira, CEO of LusoSpace.

Impact in Spain

Spain, with more than 8,000 kilometres of coastline and one of the largest fishing fleets in Europe, could benefit directly from this technology by strengthening surveillance in sensitive areas such as the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, where illegal fishing and pollution pose environmental and economic risks. It could also help improve port coordination and emergency response to maritime incidents.

In 2023, during a presentation to ANACEF, Aurora de Blas, then Deputy Director General for Fisheries Control, highlighted data showing that Spain is the only country that checks 100% of catch certificates and processing statements for imports, and inspects more than 90% of direct landings from third-country vessels, well above the 5% required by regulation.

Webinar on space technology and oceans

On 17 December, from 19:30 to 20:30 (CET), Goparity will host the free webinar “Behind the scenes of LusoSpace: smarter and safer oceans”, a session exploring how aerospace engineering is transforming maritime communications, strengthening navigation safety, and improving environmental monitoring of the oceans.

The event will feature Catarina Nunes, Product Manager at LusoSpace, who will explain the direct impact of space technology on marine protection and answer questions in an interactive session. Registration is open via this link.
