Semi Zabala, a company specialized in the development of Gallium Nitride (GaN) HEMT transistors and recently awarded the Toribio Echevarria Prize as Innovative Company 2025, has launched an ambitious industrial project called “Beyond The Power,” aimed at creating a benchmark facility for the manufacturing and testing of advanced power semiconductors for the aerospace sector.

This new investment operation is aligned with the corporate objective of promoting new activities and businesses in future-oriented sectors, activating entrepreneurial capabilities and new business development among the cooperatives. MONDRAGON, through MONDRAGON Ventures and together with the cooperatives, has invested in around 40 companies over the past decade.

Founded in Donostia–San Sebastián, Semi Zabala is a power semiconductor company dedicated to the design, manufacturing, qualification, and commercialization of semiconductor devices and circuits for power electronics, using innovative technologies that shape the future.

The addition of MONDRAGON and Fagor Electrónica as investors in Semi Zabala represents a strategic milestone that validates our vision and strengthens our position in the semiconductor sector. Their entry into our shareholding structure provides us with industrial robustness, technological expertise, and a unique support network to accelerate our growth. Looking ahead, this alliance will enable us to advance more ambitiously in developing our production capacity and in the internationalization of our GaN devices for the space sector,” says Julen Peral, the company’s CFO.

For his part, Mikel Pérez, Director of R&D and Digital Transformation at Fagor Electrónica, highlights that “with this investment, Fagor Electrónica reinforces its commitment to technological innovation in the semiconductor sector and to strengthening Euskadi as a microelectronics hub. The collaboration with Semi Zabala will allow Fagor Electrónica to access cutting-edge technologies (GaN), diversify its portfolio, and enter other strategic sectors.

Likewise, Joseba Sagastigordia, Director of MONDRAGON Ventures – Corporate Promotion Center, points out that “one of the lessons learned from early-stage investments lies in the potential of directing our investment presence toward areas of strategic European interest, which create tailwinds that support our cooperatives. This specialization of knowledge is emerging around AI applied to semiconductors, with previous investments such as Wooptix, which contributes efficiency and precision to microchip manufacturing, or Multiverse Computing, which brings quantum AI to this technological segment. And now it is Semi Zabala’s turn, in line with this context, along with other companies we are analyzing.” He also adds that “all these investments are aligned with the strategic interest and investment priorities of SETT (the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation) in this technological innovation field.

Semi Zabala has recently inaugurated its new plant in Zubieta, a key milestone for the project and a strategic step toward boosting local technological capabilities and building a stronger value chain within the sector. Located in the Eskuzaintzeta industrial area in Zubieta, the initiative includes the implementation of a fully integrated back-end process line, covering everything from wafer reception to the final device packaging.

In addition, the company has been awarded the Prize for Innovative Company at the 35th edition of the Toribio Echevarria Awards, recognizing its commitment to innovation and its contribution to technological progress in the Basque industrial sector.
