Avançsa has signed an agreement with X1 Wind, a company dedicated to developing technology in the field of floating offshore wind, through Avançsa’s Extraordinary Projects Line. The agreement is part of a global €3 million operation, activated with a €550,000 participative loan. The Catalan Institute of Energy (Institut Català de l’Energia) has also participated in this operation.

Carlos Casanovas and Alex Raventos, co-founders of the company, established it in 2017, bringing with them over 20 years of experience in the marine renewable energy sector. Since then, they have made rapid progress in technological development and secured private investment, supported by numerous awards, recognition, and financial backing from leading organizations such as InnoEnergy, the H2020 program, the EIC Accelerator, CDTI, ENISA, and ACCIÓ.

Alex Raventos, CEO of X1 Wind, expressed his appreciation for “Avançsa’s trust in the X1 Wind project, which demonstrates the shared commitment to technological innovation, talent development, and contributing to the energy transition in Catalonia and Europe in a global context.”

X1 Wind’s solution is based on the PivotBuoy system, an innovative floating platform that combines a lightweight tripod-shaped design with a Single Point Mooring system. This optimizes the floating structure by reducing material use by 40% and minimizing seabed impact thanks to vertical lines that prevent dragging and noise caused by traditional catenary systems, while also enabling installation in deeper waters.

Focused on positioning itself as a technology and service provider, the company has achieved significant milestones such as validating its technology in various laboratories, demonstrating its first PivotBuoy project in the Canary Islands under the PLOCAN pilot (Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands), and securing funding for the development of the NextFloat project within the PLEMCAT framework (Catalonia’s R&D&I Platform for Marine Energy), which will allow them to deploy and test the first pre-commercial unit in the Mediterranean Sea.

The X1 Wind project generates a significant ecosystem impact through the creation of high-quality jobs in Catalonia, the development of local suppliers, and the environmental benefits derived from its renewable energy generation potential. This agreement helps promote strategic industrial autonomy, boost the international presence of Catalan companies, strengthen the resilience of the business ecosystem, and equip industrial value chains with their own capabilities.

Clàudia Canals, General Director of Avançsa, stated that “this agreement marks an important milestone in our commitment to support projects with a high impact on the sustainable energy transition.” Canals also highlighted “the key role of institutions as drivers of innovation and supporters of transformative projects,” adding that “institutional support and leadership are essential to bring technological developments to life with a positive environmental impact and great potential to generate renewable energy.”

Partnerships such as that of Avançsa and X1 Wind demonstrate the capacity to strengthen the Catalan ecosystem and consolidate the region’s economic and business fabric by attracting investment and creating job opportunities.
