The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC), together with the Economic Promotion Society of Gran Canaria (SPEGC), has launched the IDIWATER acceleration program to foster innovation and enhance the technical competitiveness of companies in the water sector in the Canary Islands and West Africa.

The Acceleration Program

The main goal of the IDIWATER acceleration program is to boost the growth of startups, SMEs, scale-ups, and technology centers interested in developing or scaling innovative solutions in technologies applied to the water sector.

The call, open from September 2025 until June 2027, includes two participation categories:

  • Category A (TRL 2–3): disruptive ideas at early stages.
  • Category B (TRL 5–6): prototypes ready for validation and scaling.

The program focuses on accelerating solutions in four strategic areas:

  • Desalination and water reuse
  • Smart management of water networks
  • Decarbonization of water infrastructures (for early-stage projects)
  • Valorization of liquid waste

Selected ideas or projects will benefit from a range of support measures, limited to a maximum of €22,000 in indirect aid, including:

  • Specialized training
  • Strategic consulting and mentoring
  • Prototype validation in public infrastructures
  • Access to leading experimental environments, such as the DESAL+ Living Lab Platform or the IAT BIOASIS Gran Canaria incubator.

With this initiative, the aim is to strengthen the maturity and creation of technology startups, foster knowledge transfer, and promote the generation of qualified employment.

A Bridge of Cooperation between the Canary Islands and West Africa

The geographic scope of the IDIWATER acceleration program prioritizes applications from, linked to, or interested in the Canary Islands, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mauritania, and Senegal. In this way, it strengthens cooperation ties to promote sustainable and competitive solutions to major water and energy challenges.

The IDIWATER Project

IDIWATER, co-financed at 85% by the Interreg MAC 2021–2027 Program, seeks to strengthen cooperation between public centers, universities, leading companies in water cycle management, and public institutions responsible for innovation and economic development.
