GameBCN is launching its 6th Edition video game incubator and, while many teams applied, only five finalists have been awarded positions in this year’s edition. The selected studios will receive six months of intensive training in agile development methodologies, customized mentorship opportunities, weekly training sessions from industry experts, as well as constant feedback on product iterations. Afterward, the teams will showcase their products at Gamescom and demonstrate their offering to GameBCN’s network of involved publishers. At no cost to new studios, the allure of game incubation has attracted talent from across the globe.

And while this year’s teams have applied from across the world, GameBCN is strategically located in Barcelona, one of Europe’s fastest growing tech hubs. Thanks to the Catalan government’s day-one support, the Barcelona City Council, and the program’s industry sponsors: Socialpoint, Marvelous and Gameloft, the Barcelona-based program has been able to expand and offer additional opportunities with each new edition. Wacom and Tangram Solutions also provide industry tools, while many more collaborators continue to impart their wisdom on GameBCN’s budding studios.

Since the first edition, GameBCN has focused on leveling up studios with ambition and determination to produce global hits like Aragami, Etherborn, and Stay. This year it has diversified its program more than ever, with teams hailing from Belgium to Mexico and right at home. In no particular order, GameBCN’s 6th Edition’s studios are working on:

You Suck at Parking

Happy Volcano’s Belgian team has been working hard since the success of their award-winning title The Almost Gone. Put your reflexes to the test in their upcoming 3D racing royale, where braking at the right moment means the difference between crashing hilariously and reaching the next level. You Suck at Parking is available in demo-format on Steam now.

Operation Highjump

Based in the Spanish Balearic Islands, a small but driven team from Mansion Games is working on a nostalgic throwback to 16-bit era Contra-style games. Battle your way through waves of enemies in 1946 occupied Germany, destroying evil dictators and mechanical overlords as the lone Agent Joe Kawalsky.

Lethal Honor Essence

Viral Studios, from Spain’s Badajoz and Valencia regions, has found inspiration for their upcoming roguelike in the gritty world of comic books and other renowned roguelikes like Hades. Lethal Honor Essence has high replay value due to its dynamic narrative surrounding a mysterious, global agency with many playable characters and unique combat mechanics.

Dominus

Collaborating across the globe, from Mexico to Russia, GameBCN 6th Edition’s most worldwide team is bridging the 4X-mobile gap. DC Lab is developing a Polytopia-meets-Civilization mobile multiplayer game where you swipe and tap to expand and conquer the map.

The Time I Have Left

Based right here at home, the Barcelona-based duo at Ground focus on unique design and high replay value in their latest title. Core mechanics center on time-constrained storytelling, forcing users to make tough choices that will either conserve or waste their six-hour lifespan.
